Restoring an old Rolls-Royce
Posted by Ozmac on Friday, November 7, 2014 2:12 AM

As this isn't a "built" model, I am not sure if you think this is the appropiate place to show this latest little modelling project of mine. It's the restoration of a very old Dinky diecast model of a Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith, which has been slowly gathering grime in my garden shed for well over 20 years. I've just bought an airbrush kit for painting all my plastic models, but I do have a fair few rattle cans of Tamiya paints taking up space, so I've been looking for ways to use these paints up to make space in my tiny shed.

When I looked up in my shed and saw my old Rolls-Royce sitting up on the roof rafters, a cunning plan quickly was hatched...

It was not a pretty sight...

An old Dinky from my childhood...

Not many components, but all of them clapped out in various ways...

Paint stripper did its work (and you'd be amazed how well some toothpaste, water and cotton buds brought the plastic windows unit back to life)

Sanding, filling and priming brought the body back to something decent, even if a lot of blemishes remained….

Gloss black all over. The photo behind shows the look I was after. The primer and final paints are all Tamiya rattle cans. (I have bought a new airbrush, but I am looking for a few projects to use up my final stocks of Tamiya rattle can paints.)

Lots of masking tape applied...

That first coat of Metallic Silver looked so nice even the masking tape looked good...

And finally, another coat of silver plus some touching up, and….

The old Silver Wraith looks like a Rolls-Royce once more. In fact it looks better in the flesh than in the photos.

I think I've started up another modelling hobby sideline for myself: restoring old diecast. I'm never going to look at a junk shop with horrible, beaten up old models the same any more. Now, if I see an old MGA anywhere, it's the top of my hit-list...

Good work Ozmac!   Nice to see the restoration of an old diecast. If those are rubber tires, a coat or two of acrylic paint would top off the build.

Hi, Oz -

Thanks for posting this, very nicely done with good info to boot. A good job you made of it, now the finish likely is much better than when it was made, it looks just fine. A finish worthy of a Rolls Royce, Queen of the motorway.
