1968 Firebird resto-fication
Posted by captainofiron on Sunday, June 7, 2015 4:53 PM

My first car was a 1968 Firebird. The plan was for me and my dad to fix it and it would be my car in college.

Well the car is still not running more than 15 years later, haha.

But now that Revell started making my beloved first car, I decided to make a model based on how I am going to build the real car.

What I want to do is to make the car look all original, but with modern technology, so I will add EFI, disk brakes, rack and pinion steering, 4 link rear, et cetera.

So I started prepping the model, I found that its pretty decent in the details, EXCEPT the chassis, I had a 69 Camaro kit and compared and the Camaro kit is way more detailed, so I am going to switch the chassis parts.

I started detailing the door panels and dash and my first impression after years of not building models: man my hands arent as steady as they used to be (hopefully its just that I am out of practice)

Here are some pictures of the progress:

I used the seats from a 98 Firebird model and made them look like the originals (which is what I really am going to do with the 02 seats I got)

I have been thinking about putting another coat of satin black on the middle section and dry brushing it to see if I can get the "comfortweave" looking texture. We will see

Here are the A-arms from the Camaro (one of which I have modified to look like the tubular A-arms I have for my real car):

compared to the ones that come with the kit, that are just terrible looking:

Neat idea! Maybe it'll get your 1:1 project restarted!

Thanks all, yea I hope to start on the real car next year when our apartment lease is up and I can get the car out of storage and into a garage again.

I have been looking through my left over parts collection and I found a rack and pinion from a 66 Malibu model that I found but never build because it was missing so many parts.

So far I just need to find a 4th gen Camaro that I had built when I first started modeling (read terribly assembled) to take the rear axle and T56 transmission from.

Do you all know of any cool wheels to use on this project?

The real car will have 17x8 in front and 17x10 in the back. I wanted a deep dish 5 spoke wheel.

These are the wheels I want on the real car

Thanks again

So I have continued work on making the front suspension Pro-touring by machining down the a-arm pieces, and modifying the lower arms/cross member.

Im pretty happy with the results:

uppers before/after

Uppers painted

Lower machined down:

Lowers before/after

Subframe touch ups/gaps filled (because the holes in the a-arms will show whats underneath now)

And the lower A-Arms/cross member piece dry fitted:
