Kit chrome or ......
Posted by mitsdude on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 1:40 AM
As it occasionally happens my model interests have changed. I've developed an intense interest in 50's-60's cars. Mainly cars that family, friends, or myself owned. Cars that as a kid I saw on the streets, parking lots, drive ways, used car dealers, and TV commercials. I want to build them stock, showroom new. No hot rods, gassers, rat rods, rust buckets, etc. What is the general thought on kit chrome? Do you use it or strip it and use something like Alclad or BMF? I've used both of these on scifi and spacecraft models so I know how to use them.

I've got an alternative that I never thought of until I saw it and then used it. It works like a charm. I'll show you the magazine article and then I'll show you live results.

Here's my experience with my 30+ year old Gasser 37 Chevrolet that I've been working on. The wheel on the right is the OOB kit wheel with nothing on it. The L/H one has been treated with the "smoke" .

The results here are clear and it's even more evident and convincing on the car..(yes that's a clear hood from 30 years ago and it's probably going away! lol)

It  changed kit chrome usage for me forever. I still use Alclad on AM resin wheels but for OOB chrome this is the ticket for me.Wink

Depends on the kit quality.  If there is little flash, and sprue attachments are in areas that do not show, I will use the kit chrome.  If the chrome from the kit is pretty junky, I prime, paint with gloss black, and Alclad chrome or polished aluminum.
