My dad's first car
Posted by mississippivol on Thursday, May 26, 2016 9:56 PM

My dad sent me these pics when he finished this, and I thought it would be neat to share. It's the AMT Ford Fairlane dressed up as the first car he ever owned in the mid 60s. He said that he didn't have it for long as he couldn't put up with all the needling over the color. I think his next car was black... It's the first kit he has finished in years, so I'm glad to see it.

Thanks, y'all! He mentioned that they would put rubber spacers in to get the stance back in the day. He's 69.

Hello; I am just getting back into modeling and I am 67 years old, and like your dad I also owned a 1956 Ford victoria back in the sixties. Mine was orange and white. I am building the AMT ERLT model now. These forums have been alot of help for me. Things have changed in the last 40 years in the modeling industries!

Hey there, welcome to the gang! I'd love to see pics of your build when you're done. I say this "tongue in cheek", but with many of AMT's releases lately, the clock hasn't moved at allWink.

It looks like your dad still has the touch. He did a good job passing it on to you.

You Know ;

 That was the start of something strange . Ford , G.M. and Chrysler took coloring in cars to a new level . How many three or four color Mopars existed back then ? Then Pink ! Oh My Gawd ! Even on Pickups !

 I had a rather sedate 57 Chevy Bel-Aire two dr, H.T. In Cadillac Firemist Orange ! Don't blame me ! That's what the dealership called it  ! It always looked in the sun , like it was on fire !

 Of course being equipped with the early rudimentary fuel injection it could run like a cat on fire too ! Four speeds and a good clutch to foot blend didn't hurt either ! Gosh , Do they even make a car now that is that much fun to drive ?    T.B.

Looks great and thanks for sharing the memory.  My brothers first car in 73 was a 57 Fairlane he pulled out of the neighbors pasture and got running.  It was the same color and was a 4 door.  I think he only drove it through the summer and got rid of it when school started for the same reason you father did.  Thought it would have been a cool car for carload night at the drive-in except the trunk was completely rusted out.

Now !

     Can you imagine driving the wife's Mary Kay pink car felt to me . I made sure that I always had wheels afterwards , that ran well so I didn't have to do that again ! T.B.

I have no idea what my dads first car was. Would have been something late thirties- early forties. He's gone now, and wouldnt have remembered.

They had a big turquoise Galaxy station wagon, probably a 60. Thing was so big that we walked around on the roof when we washed it. His commuter car was a 63 bug, just an atroscious color scheme of light olive green/ dark olive wheels.

To this day I could never own a green car.

 Modeling is an excuse to buy books.
