Can PE parts fit into old kits?
Posted by Kelvinator on Monday, November 7, 2016 11:38 PM

I got both old kits of 1/12 Tamiya Lotus JPS and Tyrell P34 six wheeler from Japan and wonder if the new PE parts will fit perfectly.

If they are for those specific kits.... then yes Huh?

If they are generic dials, bezels, etc., then check your refs & model on!

Hmm;

 I do have to agree . If the P.E. parts were made for those cars I don't see why not !

All day....every day. Just be sure to do some research as mentioned above.

I am going to compare the original Japanese menu and the 2007 English to find out. I am hoping that Tamiya didn't change the old mold for the PE parts fitting on the 2007 release.

Tamiya don't change their molds, so if the PE says it's for a specific kit, then it will fit that kit, subject to moulding limitations.

They have updated some of their oldest kits, eg, M8 by totally replacing it, (from the original battery powered rubber-banded drive train version)

They have also Simultaneous releases of Panthers, G & A, one is £25-£30, new/good, the other is £15-£20, old/awful! (research it)

But equally, they haven't updated the Sherman M4a3 errors in the later releases, (trenches for welds, no sponson bottoms, hollow wheels), nothing major, but others have done newer, & better.

And they are also re-releasing the M3 Lee/Grants and M3/M5's with no corrections at all, despite AFV Club, Acadamy et al releasing considerably newer and better and cheaper!

My point is: I'm not paying New Tamiya/Tasca top-line prices for old/obsolete/surpassed kits at half the price.

eg Tamiyas' new M4A3E8 Sherman, good kit, reasonably priced in the uk, vs. the movie tie-in Italeri Fury... good enough, & cheaper in the uk, your choice...

Tamiya don't change their molds, so if the PE says it's for a specific kit, then it will fit that kit, subject to moulding limitations.

Actually they have done so in the past. While they have completely retooled some kits, with the M8 armored car and more recently the M10 tank destroyer, Pzkfw III and Matilda, they have also retooled some parts of molds.

For instance, when they first made the M1A1, they just made cosmetic changes to their original M1. They quickly retooled the turret to the proper size. The small sized turreted kits are out there though.

There are several other kits they have updated and retooled in the armor field.
