That got old real quick.

I'll bet.

And thank you for serving, I didn't know you were over there.

That was my second trip there; the first one was in the TC hatch of an Abrams. The second was in the passenger seat of a 4-door soft top HMMWV. Couple more afterwards as well.

Greg

That's all pretty interesting, Rob.

When I typed that I like Jeeps (and I do), it dawned on me I've never been in one. :) So you comments about getting burnt out on real jeeps hit me funny.

Your comment on finding building car stuff relaxing is interesting.

Anyway, you have fun and I'll be watching........................

Spent about 6 months in a soft top HMMWV driving around the desert in Southwest Asia. We removed the canvas doors and all of the canvas but the roof. That got old real quick.

A lot of the new macho ones on the road look really cool though. But I know what I know and would never buy one.

I find building car kits relaxing and you have near limitless options on paint colors!

This is exactly why I started building automotive subjects. Not only are the paint options limitless but when getting into non O.E.M. builds pretty much everything is on the table as far as options are concerned. I will have to admit..........it's been 4 years since I've touched an aircraft build and I find myself wanting to get back into it every now and then.

Greg

I'll be watching too.

I'm getting the (model) car bug too, and I've always liked Jeeps a lot.

I always have too when I was younger. But my senior year in college, my roommate had a Jeep with a softtop. He hated that thing because it made a terrible noise driving on the expressway. I drove it once and wasn't satisfied with it. I did buy a Mitsubishi Montero as a young lieutenant in Germany and I got the Jeep bug out of my system.

I still like the looks of them. I just moved to building military Jeeps in 1/35 scale. I own most of the 1/35 scale military jeeps available and many of the 1/24 scale ones too.

I've built the Monogram Jeep twice; once as the off road yellow one and another around the same time but from the TV show Mork & Mindy. Basically the same kit, just molded in blue without the off road gear.

I find building car kits relaxing and you have near limitless options on paint colors!

P.S. I will admit when I was looking at new cars for the wife, that I took a gander of a really nice 4-door hardtop jeep that was in the lot.

I got the "Daisy" to build for a good friend who has a "7", and then found it was a "5".  Seeing the pic of the "7" you put up, went looking and found the blue 2 in 1 kit on the bay and grabbed it.  Wasn't too bad on $$, and still a few floating around there for what I think are reasonable pricing, considering

Have had various models (1:1)of Jeeps since I got out of the service, as well as before.  Currently have an SJ (2 door full size Cherokee with the factory flares) and an XJ (4 door downsize Cherokee) as my DD's.

This is the original kit I had as a kid. I just wanted something close enough to bring back memories. Even the yellow paint is an OSHA yellow can of leftover paint from work. It was one of my favorite kits, of course not painted except for details. The body was left in yellow plastic.

I highly recommend that. It sure reminds you how much skill you do have at the stuff you are used to building...

I just built two car models, first in a long time. I couldn't get the hood to close over the engine on one.

This Jeep is swell, Rob.

Nice job on the yellow so far.

Might take a look at the Dukes of Hazzard "Daisy Jeep".. CJ-7, no top, but has the 4cyl.  Along with a funky "Golden Eagle" edition hood decal and spoked rims.  Those are still floating around for a few bucks.

Engine isn't necessary, this one is good enough. I'm glad I was able to get a modern version of the 1970s kit I built. I really wanted an off road version and this one fits the bill.

I've been forcing myself to start building outside of my confort zone. I've been joining group builds where the type build isn't my normal genre. I've been getting bogged down in my armor kits.

Revell Jeep Rubicon
Posted by Rob Gronovius on Sunday, March 25, 2018 2:02 PM

I wanted to build a Monogram Jeep that I originally built as a kid in junior high school over 40 years ago. It was a yellow off road Jeep with a "cool" eagle on the hood. I found one on eBay, but it was going for collector's prices. So, onto plan "B".

Using a Michael's 50% off coupon, I bought the Revell Jeep Rubicon. I did some research on the kit and it was originally released as a diecast kit from the movie Tomb Raider; however, now it is all plastic and molded in white.

The kit comes with two paint schemes, one a dark green park ranger vehicle and the other a yellow paint scheme. I chose the yellow version because it is closer to what I had build back in the day.

I've primed and painted some of the parts, and some minor construction has begun. Nothing special is going to be done, except use some bare metal foil on the tailgate that has diamond treadplate engraving on it. The kit looks to be a simple contruction with no engine and limited chrome plating.
