AMT '71 Corvette LT-1
Posted by BrandonK on Sunday, December 22, 2019 3:27 PM

I just wrapped this one up. I can't say that I loved the kit, I didn't. I forced myself to complete it so I would not end up on the shelf of doom.

The body needed a ton of work with seam lines and flash along the shaper edges, it was a mess. The fit of most of the parts is not good and the tires are forced to fit on wider wheels than they should and the suspension is too wide and forced the tires out too far. The chasis does not fit well either, sacrifices were made to get it in as low as it is. Too bad too, its a good looking car. If I could find another one like this from another maker I would build it, but I won't waste my time on this kit again. This is one of the few car kits I didn't build as a kid. I would have put it through the wall back then.

I had to take it outside to show off the pearlized red paint. I had to paint it 3 times before I got it how I wanted it and that means I stripped it twice. I would like to cut and buff the orange peel out but with all the issues I had with the paint I am scared to do anything with it. It's good enough for a shelf queen. I used Creatix paints, which are amazing but tricky to mix and shoot.

I really wish this was nicer kit and turned out better, but it is what it is.

Shame about the shortcomings, but came out pretty good. Engine & bay came out great, LT1s were very fast, last of the solid lifter engines I think. Handled much better than big blocks. Can still hear them in memory. PaulE

That turned out great.  I'm not a fan of poorly engineered/moulded kits.  I have zero patience for the . Nice job.

Thanks,

John

I'd all but forgotten about AMT. Looks like you did well.

'71 was one of the classic body styles, at least to me.

I've been up against battles like that from pretty much all the kit manufacturers that I've built cars/ trucks from over the past few years and it looks like you did a good job with what you had. The paint on this car looks friggin' awesome and all in all she came out lookin' pretty dang spiffy Brandon! Yes

Thanks for all the kind words, gents. I really appreciate it. This was supposed to be a quick and diry build to get me back into the mix. It took more work than I had planned but I am certainly back in the mix now with 4 kits going at all times.

This how I feel sometimes when I'm trying to fix the problems some of these kits throw at us.

I built this some time ago, completely sympathise with your comments. Needed a LOT of cajoling to get this into shape!

Nice job on yours, you did well. Engine bay and paint look great.
