1/25 Dodge Viper GTS
Posted by Mopar Madness on Thursday, April 2, 2020 3:44 PM

Hello friends.  So heres a go at my first car model.  I chose the RoG Viper GTS because it's easily my favorite peice of Mopar muscle.  IMO, those smooth Gen 1 & 2 lines are visually intoxicating.  I'll paint this beast in the 1997 livery of Shelby blue with dual frost white racing stripes.  The interior will be all black as only the 96 GTS had blue interior accents.

The chrome parts definitely look like they were spryaed in a factory so I bleached them with Clorox and will re-spray with Metal Color Chrome.  Are all kits chrome parts this gaudy?

The Gen 2 Viper wheel didn't have a chrome wheel option until 98 so I resprayed them with aluminum to mimic the brushed aluminum finish of the 97 wheels.

Thanks for looking!

Chad

I'm looking forward to your build. And yes, some kits have terrible chrome, it depends on the kit. Your choice to respray is a good one and the wheels look spot on.

Thank you Brandon, glad to have you aboard! I also bought a Revell 1970 Challenger 2 in 1 and the chrome is just as bad! Huh?

I just picked that Challanger kit also and added it to the stash. I have also grabbed some Panther Pink to paint it as well. Having the paint forces me to move kits to the head of the line. That way I can out smart myself from making delays.

When I bought my 2011 srt challenger I got a free track day up at auto club speedway in Fontana.  Got to drive all the srt vehicles but the gem at the end if the day was riding along in a viper with a driver for a couple laps.  He held nothing back!  So fun getting sideways through the turns, great acceleration and braking that felt like I was going thru the windshield.

So yes, love the choice!  Following along.

A lot of chrome is gaudy.  I have found some nicely done chrome in later tamiya cars and bikes though.

Thanks,

John

Hello friends. I think I've pretty much wrapped up the body, just need to touch up a couple of white areas around the hood scoop. I didn't have Shelby blue so I laid down a base of Vallejo Metal Color aluminum directly to the body then applied four coats of Model Air blue to give me a nice metallic effect. This was wiped smooth with a soft cloth then I applied four coats of gloss. I added the white racing stripe decals then finished with one more coat of gloss.

Stop It!

Why do you do this to me? That is so beautiful I want it! Gorgeous paint. Did you know there was a T.V. Program that showed a Pantera with a Viper engine ? It was a Viper Development car from Carrol Shelby ! !

Holy cow, how have I missed this one?

Your first car kit? Really? It looks like you picked a great one. I don't know much about Vipers, but that is one cool car. I love racing stripes. I think it reminds me of a favorite slot car, great memories.

As everyone has said, pretty much, yep.

How did you ever come up with the idea to paint Model Air Blue over metallic Aluminum? I never would have thought of that. Sure looks great!

Thank you Greg! Dumb luck really.  I didn't have a Shelby blue so I hoped that if I laid down a nice smooth aluminum metallic base and over sprayed a few coats of heavily thin blue I could get the color I wanted. Smile

Looking great. Awesome job on that serpentine belt! Is that white lettering a decal in the kit?

Fantastic paint job. Bet that it will look out of this world when photo taken out in the sunlight (if it ever comes back). Great engine too. This looks to be one for the record if it keeps on going this great. Toast
