Tamiya 1/24 Volkswagen 1300 Beetle 1966

Hello, long time no see. What a year! All the corona and stuff. Hope everybodys alright.

Christmas is coming and somehow I had the idea to build a scale model for my dad. Choice was easy as he now drives beetle (A5) and had one when he was young.

Build won't be 1:1 out of the box. I try to use photoetched parts (for the first time) and some modifications like wheels. Let's see how it goes, here is progress so far...

Pulley guard assembly.

Edges made of heavy handicraft foil.

Downside, light wash with black.

Ignition wires 0.4mm and wire boots 1.2mm.

Glued trough cylinder covers.

Fan housing assembly.

Exhausts: Flat black -> Flat aluminium -> Red brown -> AK crusted rust

Nice work. The cabin heater pipes on mine never got rusty, just dirty gray.

Hi AAQEE!

Long time no see! I will follow this build. Why? Even in miniature there's nothing as Iconic as " The Bug"

There was some misalign with ignition wires and rear chassis didn't fit properly. Needed a little filing.

Floor mats looks good. These are from Highlight Model Studio.

Flocking learned. Unbelievable hard to get it right.

- Applying white glue to glossy plastic, FAIL
- Applying flocking to semi dry paint, FAIL
- Scraping and brushing off excess flocking after curing, FAIL

Best outcome was to paint floor matte black, then white glue with brush all over and then flocking with strainer. Then gently tapping it with fingertip to settle it down and flat. After curing I used compressor with air gun, low pressure. BLow out the excess flocking.

Floormat testing. Not much flocking visible anyway after assembly.Sad

Dashboard done. Speedo and fuel gauge printed on paper and covered with clear tape. Panel lines and chrome trim was challenge to create but i'm fine with that.

That looks great!  Makes me want to build one.

Scaleproduction delivered nice wheels, ´16" Porsche Fuchs´made of white metal and polished aluminium barrel. Tyres has stretched look and is glued so the edge of the rim is showing.

Stance test. Aggressive and wide rears, front end lowered.

Happy new year! This one is progressing slowly. Corona ruined the whole Christmas and we were not allowed to see our relatives. Here it is nearly finished.

Interior is mix of body color and semi gloss antique white. Belts made of masking tape coloured with permanent marker. Under dashboard tray is a nice detail. I know the seat belt mounting points is wrong but you really cant see it when doors in place.

Engine done. Testing with body. I like those fenders with wide tyres.

Frond end done with little wiring. Now its time to assemble. I also broke engine cover hinges.. I want to try if magnets can keep cover on place and it would be easily removed.

What a beauty!  Love the look of that car, and the color is great. If you are familiar with the Orks of games- workshop 40k— Red ones goes fasta.

Alternative OLD SCHOOL technique:

Mix talcum powder with enamel paint of the right colour & stipple on with old short haired paintbrush.
I havent tried this with acrylics, but I use Mr Surfacer 500 to add texture to castings.
