Not sure what the right diameter is for your application but check out Top Studio.  They do amazing detail sets for cars/bikes.

 Thank you for this I checked them out and from what I can gather you can't buy from them directly... And they only have 2 UK stickisys and they are all sold out... I will keep my eye on it.. Thanks again..

There is an electrical cable that does a good job of simulating braided hose.  It is used for microphone shielded leads.  Comes in a few sizes.  Smallest size even works on 1:24 scale.  Small coax might even work for 1:12.   Both are a little hard to find, only available from large electronics venders.
