1934 Ford Early Modified

Love those MPC modifieds.  I have built all except the Vega.  Love short track dirt.

This is a fun kit to build and it's going together well. Haven't seen the Vega.  

Back in the early 1960's I used to hack modifieds together from standard kits, be it 36 or 40 Fords etc. I used slot car tires, split and widened wheels from the kits . Mostly where I lived short track modifieds ran on 1/4 mile oval pavement. But I still have a certain affection towards these things. After I grew and moved on I landed nearer a1/2 mile dirt track. Got pretty much the same thrill. Later yet I myself got into drag racing with a 67 Mustang GT Fe powered but that's another story..

There's a race track about 45 min away and they run sprint cars and modifieds.  Haven't been there in years though.

I live 5 miles from Barona Speedway a 1/4 mile clay oval.  Don't get out there as often as I'd like but man it's fun when I do.  There's a 1/8 drag strip there as well which I've been down several times :).

I think I built this kit years back (EDIT: it was the 1936 'Wild One'), not sure I got all the wheels on the ground but I'd like to give it another go so it's on the wish list.  Your's looks great, those pipes!  These are fun subjects.  I've done the Ridge Runner Pinto and have the Vega referred to in the stash.

This is the MPC 1934 Slammer Modified kit I picked up a while back. I used the body to do an airbrush test with Testors enamel paint.  Not the color I would have liked for the 34 but it looks fine. It's basically box stock except I'm putting in a wiring distributor I made since the kit did not come with one.  I also modified the the two piece headers with 7/32" brass tubing as they looked pretty bad. Wheels were painted with Tamiya TS-88 Titanium Silver Lacquer.              

 

The red on your 3 window coupe is close enough to put the Coca Cola white ribbon on the side and make it a locally sponsorded Coca Cola franchise race car ( popular 1970's decoration for Coca Cola vehivles was that white ribbon looking stripe).. I know a guy who did that locally in the mini mod class here ( mini mod is limited to 4 cylinder engines). But the local Coke franchise at the time supplied a small amount of money, all the paint and decal logo. I know because he got the stuff from me who painted the coke fleet at that time. So I had decals and stencils and such. And the Dupont Imron or Centari coke red ( his choice). It helped that his family was an established long term high volume account selling Coke beverages.

Hah but I leave you on your own to find the decals lol !

There are several tracks in this area that run sprints, modified, hobby stock and other short trackers.  Some pavement, some still dirt, thank goodness.  One usually has a Woo event each year.

Typical Ma. land became too valuable, taxes too high, got surrounded by housing or whatever and the tracks all closed and sold off. But NH still has dirt and paved and I believe Conn. as well.

One of my nephews still drives at a couple of local tracks. The car was his fathers who still drives once in a while. When the father was driving full time, my nephew used to say "Dad, you're not driving deep enough into the corners. That would help you win a few races". When the son took over driving, the father said "Dustin, you're driving too deep into the corners. Back off a little earlier and you'll do better".

One of these days I'll have to make him a model of that car.

I used to drag race down at Atco Raceway in N.J. back in the early 60's. Drove until I finally realized that driving the car at the track and driving it back and forth to work didn't work too well. Now I live about 1/2 mile from Maple Grove Raceway and can hear the burnouts from my front porch. Been here almost 3 years and haven't been there yet.

Olezippi-You are doing a fantastic job on a kit with a few 'challenges'-I just finished the Ridge Runner Pinto for the Weekend Madness GB so I'm aware of those challenges.  Looking forward to seeing more progress pics.

Finished this one up this morning.  I really enjoyed building this one.  Had and issue with the roll cage but other than that it went together really well. I'm really happy with the way the headers turned out using the brass tubing and going with the flat black. 

That turned out great!  The exhaust turned out awesome - I may steal that idea from you.

I used to do them both ways as well, I just visioned this one with a little evidence of having been raced is all. Kind of thinking out loud. I haven't built one in years, when I did many many moons ago. I kit bashed them from existing coupes,even sedan kits. But today I saw several of the various MPC modifieds at Ebay, for pretty reasonable money too.

I got my 1/16 57 T Bird at HL on a 40% off sale. I've shot the test paint for it, decanted Rustoleum 2x enamel called Goss Ocean Mist but I haven't officially started that kit yet. It's kind of a light aqua. Everyone does them red it seems at least in my mind, I wanted a different color and it's very close to one of the original 1957 chips.

Right now I been turing hollow christmas tree ornaments though, plenty of models in various stages but nothing happening on any of them presently. I have two targeted for purchase, the MPC 28 Lincoln ( I built the roadster over 40 years ago and still have it, needs a bit of fixing up) touring car and one of these modifieds, maybe the 36 Plymouth or the Chevy coupe.
