Mach 5
Posted by keavdog on Thursday, March 17, 2022 10:54 AM

Picked up this snap-tite a while back out of nostalgia.  I used it as a test mule for 2K polyurethane automotive clear coat.   It comes in a gallon can plus a can of activator.  I've seen some awesome finishes and that's what the folks (BK & Mark) were using.  So, didn't spend a lot of time on the kit itself and I also tried printed decals for the first time as well since the kit only came with stickers.  Thumbs up on the 2K clear coat.  The pics don't do justice to the shininess of the finish - probably white isn't the best demonstration color.  Anyhow here's Speed's Mach5 - my first of 2022.

Thanks,

John

Nicely done. I bought a couple of these when the movie came out.

There's a glue together version with more features and water slide decals.

Thanks,

I'm going to try their paint system for an upcoming Indycar build.  Thanks for sharing.

Why not make it an F1 car and join the GB ;) https://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/29/t/190316.aspx

Notes from BK regarding using the 2k clear - spot on BTW:

I used my .5 needle AB, 4 parts clear, 1 part activator, straight through, no issues.

Just gear up and don't breath this stuff or get it on your skin.

20 psi was more than enough.

Thanks,

John

I do have a F1 kit in the stash.  Senna's Camel Lotus 99T.  It's an odd yellow color.  I want to get into more group builds but I'm more geeked for the Indy build.

BTW, F1 starts this weekend.  I'm super excited.  Carlos Sainz 2022 drivers champion.  Mercedes 2022 constructors.

And what will Hamilton do after the debacle last year?  Will Max be the man?

Dude, I'd love to see Senna's Camel.

Thanks,

John

I think Hamilton will definitely be motivated after he was robbed last year.  He's a 7 time world champion so obviously he's a serious threat every race weekend.  Im looking forward to how he gets along with young gun teammate George Russell.  Red Bull will be quick too.  I'm hoping the Ferrari's will fight for wins with Mercedes and Red Bull.

Very rarely in F1 do you get three teams with a legimate chance at a championship in a given season.  How great would it be if a handful of drivers are contenders at every event?  The Max vs. Lewis battle is great but just imagine a couple more guys in the mix. Maybe the new cars give us this.

Cheers, Enjoy the racing

Paul

Nice work John! Toast

Got one of the new Mach 5's for Christmas. Looks like a good kit. Have it in line for sometime this year.

Very cool build John. Beautifully done. Seems the 2K system worked well as did your decals.

Thanks fox.  It was pretty fun to build and a really nicely done snapfit.

Thanks Joe.  I'm pretty pleased with the clear.  I need a couple more test mules before I spray it on something I really care about.  But it does leave a really nice self leveling shine.

Thanks,

John

John, everytime I look at the kit I think of somethimg else I could do with it. Guess I'll just have to build the first one stock and then get a  couple moreWink.

Or I could build it another way then build a stock one.Confused

The only thing I did was drill out the wheels as the pinwash didn't cut it.

Thanks,

John

Didn't see this when you first posted it John. This came out very well and the clear looks awesome. 2K clear eh? I'm looking for a suitable replacement for the clear that I use as  it's been difficult to find something even remotely close. I'll be chccking into this stuff............
