assembled1967 amt mustang fastback
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, April 10, 2005 10:08 PM
Hi,

I just bought a vintage assembled1967 amt mustang fastback, w/ no box or instructions. This will be my 1st time refurbishing a model car. The paint is cracked and the engine appears not complete. Here are my questions.

1.I paid $30.00 for it. was that a good price?
2. Where can I obtain a photo of how this model car should look completed?
3. Where can I obtain the original instructions?
4. I want to strip the paint and airbrush it all over again, someone recommended soaking all the parts in castrol super clean, purple bottle, what do you think? It appears that the chrome was also painted on.
5. I also want to to add new axels and wheels since to ones on the car appear to be shot.

As you can tell I'm new to the hobby and want to do it right, so if you can help me out that would be great.

1. 30 bucks sounds steep for something you will refurbish anyway but I've spent a pretty buck on something I really like. So if you dig it, who cares.
2. Google is the place to start.
3. Maybe someone on the forum can copy a set if they have it. Maybe ask that specific question.
4. I've been using castrol super clean for a year now with no problems. Some paints have to soak quite awhile. I also heard 100 percent alcohol works. There was a letter on this in a recent FSM.
5. Model Car Garage has engine parts and R&D Unique has tons of wheels. Axels you make out of straight brass or aluminum rod.

I use odor-free Easy Off oven cleaner for the stripping. Keep windows open and fans blowing.

How does the greenhouse look? The windows could be tough.

Have you thought about doing a diorama or intentionally weathering the car further? You could get a new Stang of the same vintage and do a great "before and after" garage scene or something along those lines. Atermarket wheels and tires in a hobby shop can be pricey. You may be able to find another Stang kit in that scale for the same price.
