You'll excuse me for going slightly off the topic, but I wouldn't consider using the typewriter whiteout because the whole deal hinges on how well you apply the glue to the raised letters. I would occur to me that using a white paint pen would be easier to control and be done with it in one step.

Try finding typwriter correction tape at a local office supply shop. It is a self-adhesive whiteout on a pliable tape. You get about 15 pieces to a pack here in Ontario for $1.50. One piece is enough to do approx 4 sets of tires in 1/24 scale.

Simply brush the raised section of lettering with a superglue or similar. Apply the tape over top and burnish it on with an eraser of a pencil or similar smooth applicator. Seal it with a light spray of dullcote (Testors or similar) and you're done.

I've never actually heard of this, but it seems to me it would work the same way as applying gold leaf. Brush glue onto where you want the leaf to go. Apply the leaf and let dry, then brush off the excess. I'm not sure about the white material used, but the glue is probably a white glue or craft glue.
