In Memory of Matthew...Yellow Corvette
Posted by rodc on Tuesday, November 15, 2005 9:46 PM

Hello All,

I just finished Revell's '78 Vette (Indianapolis 500 Pace Car) but finished it as my late son Matthew would have liked it......bright yellow.

Basically the kit is OOTB with the exception of the decals that I made myself using CorelDraw software, Micro-Mark clear decal film and Krylon acrylic gloss clear spray.  I think the decals turned out OK given they were the very first ones I have ever made.

Paints included Pactra's Racing Finish Daytona Yellow from a rattle can and both Humbol and Model Master enamels.

Everything was sprayed with Future prior to decal application and then sprayed with Future again to seal the decals.

Although hard to see in the photos, all the autoglass is actually tinted yellow....achieved with a mixture of food colouring and Future that the autoglass sat in for a couple of hours and then carefully suspended over paper towelling to allow the excess to wick away and for the Future to dry.

A couple of the pictures are close-ups of the front and rear license plates.  The rear one is the date that my son Matthew was killed (March 28, 2005......280305) and the front one "Bud" is what I used to call him.  He had a great passion for cars and was looking forward to getting his learners permit this past summer until, ironically, a hit-and-run driver robbed him of his life and plunged me and his mom into the deepest pits of misery that we are still grappling with. Knowing his love for cars and the 78 Vette was one both of us dreamed of one-day owning, I built it the way he would have wanted!

Although this is only my second auto kit (I usually build things that fly), I think it turned-out well.

Thanks for looking.......

Hi Rod,

Sorry to hear that your son passed away under those terrible circunstances. I cannot even begin to imagine the sorrow and pain you and your family are experiencing. Stay strong & God Bless.

.........................................................................

That is one great Vette you have built.  I looked at the pictures carefully & the paint & detailing is top notch. Nice work & thanks for posting those pics.

Take care, Bill.

RODC,

Please accept my deepest condolances to you and your wife on the loss of your son. As a parent I know that there can be no deeper anguish than the loss of a child. You have done a beautiful job on the Corvette and it is a great tribute to your son. Let it be a monument to his memory.

Scott,

Your story really touched my heart and I send you and your wife my prayers and hope you find the comfort you need in each other.   I especially liked the Corvette because it's so well built and a beautiful tribute to your son.  I have a Corvette and must say you have captured the magic.  May God be with you both.

Life is tough. Then you die.

RODC,

You and your wife have my deepest condolences. I hope that you both find peace and happiness in the future. Your model is a testimony of your love for your son, and is a lasting tribute to him.

I've always had a soft spot for yellow vettes!

So long folks!

RODC,
Thanks for sharing your story and the pics of your Vette.....and for unloading on us........it's a great thing to build the model of the car that you both would have one day built - very cathartic - and given time, in the future every time you see that model you'll smile with the thought that it's special.
Mate, I've got two kids and simply cannot begin to understand what your family is coping with every day - I don't even know you buy I truly hope that everyday the pain eases a little more.
All the best, mate.

Cheers, LeeTree

My condolences to you. I was a Corvette fanatic myself when I was a teenager back in the '70's.
