It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere Porsche 956

For those of you not familiar with slot car racing's finer points, I would like to introduce you to 1/32 scale slot car racing in the 21st century...  This car has a Slot.It light kit installed which has working head and tail lights, and when power is removed, the tail lights get brighter, just like the real cars.  Pretty cool stuff!

If you would like to learn more about this fun "little" hobby, visit www.slotcarillustrated.com and check out how far slot car racing has come!

This is a Slot.It Porsche 956.

I finished the Tropical Time Racing It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere Margaritaville 956 on Friday night, just in time for the 4 hour enduro on Saturday at SSR Lake Lanier in North Georgia. She ran like a barefooted tourist on a hot Key West street.

I painted her with Testors' MM Enamels, did the decals with the Testors Printable system, and clear coated with Testors as well. I tried the Tamiya acrylics for the first attempt, and it was disastrous. Luckily, plain blue Windex removes even dried acrylics and I was able to salvage the body and get a second chance.

I was pleased with the results, although I will say if you are going to use the printable decals, make sure you use a color other than complimentary colors on painted areas. Had I known that the blue would be so transparent, I would have gone with reds and oranges instead of the blues and greens on the sides. They kind of got killed by the yellow underneath.

Anyway, nice site, and thanks for looking!

I hope y'all enjoy the pics!

Very nicely done John! Great scheme!

Excuse my ignorance, but how long-lasting will details like the wiper and the tow-in hook be on a slotcar? Or are these made quite sturdy?

But hey, seeing that it's 5 o'clock (somewhere), it must mean I must get going to get home! Wink [;)]

Thanks!

I finished the car Friday and raced it in a 4 hour endurance race on Saturday.  It was a heck of a beating (lots of side-side nerfing going on in the corners) and the only damage the car sustained was a few small paint chips on the front and a little wear on the very end of the tail on the sides where it would rub against the guard rails.  They will eventually come off if raced hard for any length of time, but so far so good.  We try to respect each other's cars as much as possible.

Another factor is we are not using magnets—silicone slicks and weights are used to balance the cars and keep them even.  The cars behave more like 1:1 racers because they slide a little more and keep you driving.  When magnets are used, the speeds are higher, but there is a viscious breaking point that creates more "snap" when the car [driver] loses it and it makes for more damage in wrecks.

I forgot to add that we ran 21 "real" miles in that 4 hour period.  My third place finish was 1087 laps.
