Tamiya Honda Dome Mugen NSX DONE!!!!!
Posted by Mike H. on Thursday, May 8, 2008 11:12 PM

Here's the kit -

This is my first journey to decal hell and my friend is Micro Sol. Big Smile [:D] I've never attempted anything this extensive with decals, but I've got to do it sometime.  What I've gotten done so far is a combination of four decals.  Three are combined for the bottom of the door/body portion.

As I journey ever farther into decal hell, I've begun actually drinking the Micro Sol.  It calms a person really.   Laugh [(-D]

I've got most of the body decals on today.  These next center hood decals are going to be a problem, but hey, I'm learning right?  The front fender decals are still trying to lye down as you can see in the photos.  If they're dry enough tomorrow, I'm going to try a slice and over-lay with the curvature to see if that helps.

If you don't have patience, this is not a kit for you.  Trust me.

Cool build! I have built the Tamiya Mobil1 NSX, decals aren't quite that extensive though.

Round 1 is done.   WOO!HOO!  Now I've got to wait for everything to dry good and seel them before I commence to the overlying set of decals.  There are a couple small spots for me to touch up with paint, but I expected it.  To put things in perspective, the air ducts on the hood consist of 3 decals each (inside and outside combined) aside from the #18 decal and the blue "t" in the center.  Will I ever tackle something like this again????  Not anytime soon!  LOL

Mike H.

I've got this kit in my stash to build so I'm going to watch this build with interest. Your decaling looks great! Did you spray the body with anything prior to decaling? I had thought the body would have been painted a base blue, but I guess it's pretty much all decals. Cowboy [C):-)]

Stephen,

I did no prep to the body at all.  I left it bare white plastic(the directions say paint white) but I did shoot it with Novus #1 spray polish first and clean it well and allow for ease of decal placement.  The only parts that are painted on the body to this point are the nose cone and the rear deck lid.  Feel free to email me with any questions.

I got the engine done.  Just need to add the axles and brakes then it's off to the chassis.  This is a great kit thus far.  Everything's fit beautifully.

I've got a rolling chassis!  Still a bit of touch up painting to do.  It's starting to look like a race car!

Hey Mike,

It's looking great so far!! Are some of the engine parts chromed or did you have to paint the metal parts? I only ask because I'm at work and can't look at my kit right now.

OK.  Interior's complete, and I've entered the second round of decal hell and mounted the body to the chassis.  On a whole, the kit itself is an absolute gem.  I've only had one issue and that was on final assembly where the rear bumper held up the joining of the chassis/body.  I pulled off the rear bumper, attached the body to the chassis and reattached the bumper.  No problems.

It's finally done!!  The Christmas present from my wife is complete.  There were two sheets of decals with this kit which cover 80% of the body.  Decals on top of decals, and decals.  It's not perfect, as evident in the pictures, but it was a grand learning experience to say the least and a FANTASTIC kit.

WOW, MIke! I am simply stunned that that kit's colors are alll from decalling!

I truly commend uou for pushing your own bar up, and attempting a new frontier, i.e., the uber-decalling! YOu've really mastered it, as far as anyone can tell! This looks beautiful!

Congrats on a fabulous model, and the new knowledge and experience you've gained! (Ain't that Microsol just the SH*T?!?!) Big Smile [:D]

Good work, I know exactly what kind of work you pulled off here.

I finished mine about six months ago.
