Need help with a technique
Posted by wing_nut on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 5:38 PM

I need your help. I am looking for ideas on how to replicate the ribbed surfaces on a resin Luscombe that I am working on at the moment.

What follows area few things I've tried and that have not worked very well. So maybe if you see how to tweak it so it works... or a whole new way to go... I am all eras.

I have tried gluing short lengths of very thin wire, .006, with a piece of tape as a stop to get the front line straight. Problem is the CA beads up on the wire by the time I place it so there are miniscule little blobs of glues at the edge of the wire. Tried doing the same thing into a scribed grove. Better but still the same blobs. Different glue? Not wire but something else?

One thing that almost worked was to lay some glue down into the scribed grove then sort of squeegee off the surface and lay the wire into that. Not too bad but the CA, slow setting, still sets too fast. Different glue suggestions?

HELP!!!!!!

Wing_Nut,

You might try stretched sprue and liquid cement instead of wire and CA glue.  Keep the scribed grooves, too.

Good Luck,

Ray

What scale is the model, again?  You might try thread- it may be easier to glue in.  Some monofilament nylon stuff should work.  If it is a larger scale model, there should be strip styrene stock that would work.  There is even fine triangular strip stock which would be close to correct cross section.

If you take the self adhesive foil used on furnaces and turn it up side down; use the tip of a butter knife to score the ribs into the tape. Now cut the tape to cover the whole control surface, that should do it.Big Smile

You are talking about the control surfaces ,are you not ? Well just go to the LHS and get the ribbed sheet that EVERGREEN sells for roofing on scale buildings .        tankerbuilder

Paint the control surfaces with a heavy coat. While the paint is still wet, lay down the fine wire in the paint. After the wires are placed to your satisfaction, and the paint is dry, apply a second coat over the whole shebang. Should come out looking ok.
