Auster aircraft scale 1/1
Posted by T-rex on Monday, November 15, 2010 1:20 PM

Wasn't sure of posting this in the civil aircraft section since its not a model, but it is a aircraft, and I want to share it to you guys.

At the Calgary Aero space museum I've been volunteering for a few months helping restoring there aircrafts project. Right now, we are trying to finish this old Auster MK 6 aircraft build in 1946, was used as a civil trainer, crop duster and glider tower, but after six crashes, the Auster was disassemble, and stored for 30 years until the museum bought it and is trying to reassembled it as a civil trainer.

Its been about 2 years since the project started, and the Auster is almost done, all that is left is painting the nose cover and installing the engine. The plane will remained half naked, to show off the interior and the frame work.

I was hoping of getting it done by Christmas, but it will probably take longer, this is of course harder to make than a scale model, but just as fun.

Working on: Trumpeter SU-152 (1/35) Trumpeter E-10 (1/35) Heller Somua (1/35)

It looks great! Nice Poly-Fiber cover job, it is the same process I am using on my Christen Eagle (also 1/1 scale)

We have a similar airframe in a friend's basement, a Taylorcraft BC-12D that has been converted to a SwickT, clipped wings, enlarged tail and a pumped up IO-320, 180hp in front. Ought to be a beast!

Have you flown a Ford lately?

Hi T-Rex, I found your great Auster pics because of a Google search hit. I am a volunteer member of the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum UK and we have just inherited an Auster AOP6 project. I have the repair manual and the parts list but I am urgently trying to find the Illustrated parts Catalogue (IPC), photos, or any detailed exploded view drawings, to try and make sense of what goes where. Your photos are the best I've found so far - I hope you have more.

I’m hoping that you may be able to help, or direct me to where I might have some luck. (BTW, I have also mailed the BCAM).

Regards

John

Hi

Don't see a lot of Auster mentions here, so I thought I'd throw in a link to the 1/72 Antarctic Service model of the AOP Auster that I built a while ago.

Here's pic of the finished model, in a suitably chilly setting.

This 1/1 stuff goes hand in hand with model building. A series of challenges and problems to be solved. In the end we have a display piece that we're are proud of or at least satisfied with our work and instills pride. What could be a better way to spend your time. I have always liked modeling and restoration at any scale. Good for the soul!

Here's a 14 month 1/1 1969 Hodaka project nearing completion and I can soon get back to my 1/48 Stuka. All fun!

Max (or Hodakamax, I answer to both.)

Hey thanks Gary and T.B. Yes T.B. you can ride it. Still some tuning of the extensively modified engine, action photos to be done for an article, a few local Motorcycle shows and it will be off to the trails where it belongs. There's still fun to be had on this project!  Big Smile

Max

Ps--Here's a few construction pictures. What a fun model this one has been!
