Minicraft 1/144 DC-3 TAA Sunbird
Posted by gregbale on Friday, September 14, 2012 3:09 PM

A quick build of perhaps my favorite DC-3 livery ever, Trans Australia Airlines' "Sunbird Service" which connected to Papua, New Guinea from the late 1950s through the early 1970s. Build was straight out of the box, with slightly modified exhausts and the addition of suitable aerials, and decals were homemade.

Hope you enjoy.

Greg

Would never by looking at that it has a wingspan of less than 8 inches. Damn that's nice.  What kit is it?

Edit:  DOH!  Just looked at the thread title.Whistling

Boy, that looks great!

I have three of those kits to build, with different airline logos. Hope mine come out that nice!

That looks great!  What did you use for the NMF?

Thanks, guys.

That looks great!  What did you use for the NMF?

I used Tamiya XF-16 acrylic flat aluminum, with a Future overcoat. (I usually use enamel for any NM, but I was out.)

Nice work, Greg. I've always liked this livery, but I really want to build a DC-3 in Bush Pilots Airways like I used to see occasionally in Brisbane.

Thanks, Aaron. I've got both Qantas and BPA on the "one of these days" list.

Thank you, Tony.

For all the kit's faults (and they are well-discussed online), it's a fairly easy build. And there are soooo many cool DC-3/C-47 schemes around, 1/144 is the perfect scale to build them in quantity.

The problem is...I keep finding neat new schemes faster than I can get the rest of them in my stash even started.

Yes on this one - and yeah, I keep finding schemes that I want to do my -3's in as well!

I tried to build that kit, but got so frustrated trying to clean up the wing root area that I threw it in the garbage. Glad to see someone who pulled it off, maybe I'll try again.

It's one of many annoying bits in the kit. When the fuselage was assembled and seams fully dried, I wedeged a length of sprue in at the rear of the gap to spread the wing roots closer to the corresponding wing mating edge. It made cleanup a lot easier.

Yeah, I also put a piece of streched sprue on the aft part of the wing on the bottow where it meets the fuselage. The problem was the wing fillet on the upper portion of the wing. It made me really frustrated, then my cat stepped on it one day, guess it was his way of saying " enough is enough."
