Airliner kits?
Posted by wing_nut on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 5:46 PM
I am in need of some help from guys that are into airliners.  When American Airlines changed their livery a few years ago I thought it looked great.   On one leg f my trip least week I got to finally fly AA and was able to watch these jets come and go while I sat at the gate.  Just gorgeous.
I found  some nice looking decals by Nazca-Decals for the aircraft in the list (originally done foe kit size comparisons) I put together below.  Some don't have review, others do.  The Zvezda kit appears to be the most recent releases and have been well received from what I've seen.
So the help I am looking for is... anyone have any knowledge of any of these kits to say, "Absolutely build that one!" or conversely, "If you buy that kit you need to get your head examined!"

Also, is there a forum that is airliner modeling dedicated?

The chart...  I am leaning towards the 737, 767 or the A321.

And the profiles...

All are good choices, build them all. I stay in 1/144, 1/200 is just too small. the scale does have devoted builders though. If you build the Revell 737-800, the Revell kit is fine but go to Contrails Models and get the new upturned winglets. I have the Revell kit and I have the AA decal set from Nazca coming in the mail. Flew on one a few weeks ago.

Pother airliner options are from Minicraft. Some aren't that great, just older molds, but some come from new molds and look great. I'm working on an MD80 now that is very nice. Using decals from Draw Decals for a Delta aircraft I flew on from the same trip above. Once it is done I have to finish decalling a Revell 1/144 A380.

Good luck with your choice.

I love AA too.  But being an older guy I really love the old bare aluminum and old markings, on DC- series airplanes.  I have few choices except Minicraft (and a couple of Roden).  Indeed the older ones need some work.  I love the new Minicraft light planes using their new molding technology, and would sure like to see them redo the old kits, but I suppose the market for old DC airliners wouldn't make that likely :-(

I can comment on many of these kits; however, I have built the Zvezda 787 and it was beautiful! The fit is fantastic and it produces a wonderful kit. I've got pictures of it posted on this Forum that I did in United livery. I have also built the older version of the Minicraft 737-400 in AA livery, but it was so long ago that I'd have to build another one to give my thoughts on that one.

I know that Zvezda just released the 777, I'm hoping that the other Zvezda kits have as good of fit and detail of the 787. I'd really like to see Zvezda come out with a 737 kit. I've also heard good things about the A320 and A321 kits, as well as the 767. Hope that helps.

On the Bench:  Lots of unfinished projects!  Smile

Thanks for all the responses fellas.

I've been reading lots of good stuff about the new Zvezda kits.  I think I am going to go with the A321.  At least until I change my mind again. Whistling

Don,

I have the new Minicraft Super Cub and it looks the same as the old Entex kit except with more flash. It includes the float sprue from the new tool 172 kit though. I was hoping for a retool like the 172.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.
