AZ Model 1/48 Zlin Z-50 - WIP
Posted by keavdog on Saturday, May 18, 2019 2:32 AM

I saw a 1/32 build of this plane in Damaged magazine and did a bit of poking around and found the AZ Model 1/48 version.  In the past I flew RC trainers, cubs and acrobatic planes.  This one caught my eye.  So here's something different.  I found after market instrument panel, and canopy masks.  The kit comes with a small PE fret and a resin spinner.  It's TINY!  Looks like  1/72 but it's 1/48.  Details for the registration, national markings and stencils are called out in the instructions but the graphics sheet have no instructions so a bit of a crap shoot so we'll see.  It's a bare metal finish which I'm pretty comfortable with now using the Alclad products- but there's red paint involved... which I find troublesome so we'll see.  After a few camouflaged models (except the T-28B) I wanted to do something shiny.  Pulled out a few cars but this little bird intrigues me.  So here we go...

Thanks,

John

Talk about tiny- I built a 1:72 Acroduster.  Boy, is that tiny!

I bet that 1/72 acroduster tested your optivisor!

Bit of progress.  Alclad dull aluminum interior bit of cockpit work and got the wing and cowl together.  We are in the land of no locating pins so it may get interesting when I go to put everything together.  There will be filler here btw but I will say the fit of this kit impressive so far.  The canopy was a bit of a mess but I polished it and dipped in future and it looks pretty good now.  The AM cockpit panel looks really nice but doesn't line up just right with the kit hood.

Mocked up - lot's of wing and full length ailerons

Thanks,

John

Looking great!  Hey, I built this very same kit 3 years ago.  It turned out so well, that, to my surprise, it placed Gold in the Civil Aviation Category at JaxCon.

I enjoyed the build immensely.  The aftermarket stuff wasn't available back then.  I scratch built most everything that wasn't in the box.  If you want to see how mine turned out, search for my entry called "1/48 Zlin 50M Stunt-Aerobatic plane" from May of 2018 in this Forum Subject.  I'm excited to follow your build tutorial.  I hope you like it as much as I did.

Hey Steve, nice job!  Ya, so far so good.  The fit is good.  Tiny little bird.

Thanks,

John

Thanks.  Im doing the aluminum and red.  I'll use a couple shades of alclad II and try to match the decal red.  My only concern here is you paint the underside of the wing red and there are decals for the silver.  I'll have to see how the silver decal looks.

Thanks,

John

I've got her all glued together.  A couple issues.  The underside fuselage to wing had a pretty big gap but I think had I done more fitting and sanding it could have been avoided.  Also mounting the cowl is interesting.  The horizontal stablizers were fun given no locating pins!  Anyhow, I'm not baging on the kit - it's actually pretty nice, just challenging lining things up.

Thanks,

John
