Sherman Tankers 10th Armored, Germany 1945
Posted by Stampede on Friday, December 12, 2008 6:41 AM

Just thought I'd post a quick evolution thread on my Sherman crew that I made for my Sherman M4A3

Here's when I started the faces...

Commander...

Driver...

The pics below are before the filter/wash/weathering stage.

The TC's goggles looks a bit cloudy in the pics due to the fact that the Kristal Klear wasn't totally dry when the pics were shot. I painted the inside of the goggles OD to replicate the helmet below, and added Kristal Kleer in several layers to try and replicate the "glass".

Chose to use a bit of "artistic freedom" regarding the colors on the M1941 combat jacket and bib overall. These are a bit "boring" color wise, but I checked some pics and found that I could get away with the color variation.
For the bib overalls I mixed Tamiya Dark Yellow and Buff and for the M1941 jacket i mixed Buff and Deck Tan. Highlights were done with Vallejo Panzer Aces Highlights US Tanker and white.

The TC...

I made wires for the internal head set in the helmet with thin wire from a loudspeaker.
Saw this in a picture and decided to add this as a little detail. Smile [:)]

Here's the driver so far...
Decided to add some color to this guy, so I painted his scarf off white with red stripes. Recon it's not by the book, but in a combat situation I wouldn't think it'd matter. Wink [;)]

Pics below of the finished figures are shot just before they ended up in the Sherman.
Added the divisonal and rank insignia in addition to a final weathering step.

Did you add the texture to the M1 Helmet?  Those're outstanding... Come clean though, the 10th Armored SSI and rank chevrons are decals, right?

Agreed... the only thing that makes me more jealous about that M4A3 you did, is the figure work. Outstanding figures to top off the finest Sherman I've ever seen modeled.

@Hammer: Thank you very much! There where faint texture on the M1 helmet so I just used Mr. Surfacer to kinda "sharpen" it a bit. Nah, the SSI and rank chevrons where handpainted by yours truly... Burger [BG]

Kidding aside, those are Archer tranfers and damn good if i may add! Smile [:)]

@Huxy: Thanx! Smile [:)]

@SteveM: I'm humbled! Blush [:I] Thank you so much for the very kind words both on the figures and on my Sherman! Thanx again, it's very much appreciated.

@senojrn: Thank you VERY much, glad you like my figure effort.

When I first read this, I nearly barfed coffee all over my keyboard, mostly because I knew this was highly possible, given your skills. I combed back over the pix, saying quietly, "that son of a..."

I had completely missed the next sentence...

... then I read this. I feel much better now. All is forgiven Angel [angel]

Carry on.

The patches turned out very well, I might have to invest in some patch decals. Big Smile [:D]

I've been making my own with my printer and some decal paper, but I cant seem to get the detail I want with MS Paint.. Gonna have to switch to Photoshop I guess..

Here's the ones I made (they print out a bit smaller than shown here):

As you can see, the numbers don't show on the AD patches, and the SSI leaves a bit to be desired.. Can still tell what division, but not very easily..

I get it at Hobby Lobby... Or you can order it from about any online hobby shop... I use Testor's, come in both clear and white... You'll need Testor's decal bonding spray as well to spray over the decals after you print them...

Some really outstanding figures here...no criticisms...my only comment is a personal preference: I would have made the coverall a bit darker or lighter to add more contrast to the underlying uniform...great faces; nice touch on the scarf...5 stars!!! Looks like oils on the faces?

@SteveM: He he!Big Smile [:D]Good thing you didn't ruin your keyboard with the coffee! Thanx again!

@psstoff995's lbro: Thank you! Yup you gotta try out some of the Archer stuff, brilliant products!

@Hans von Hammer: Yup, Photoshop is the way to go. Start out with a big document and shrink down to the size you need, great crisp details are the result. Smile [:)]

@Manny: Thank you very much! Glad you like the faces and the scarf, just felt that one of the guys needed a touch of color. The pics came out a bit on the light side so the coveralls are a bit darker IRL, but I definately see your point. No oils on the faces just Andrea acrylics. Thanx again, means a lot!

Uh oh Hans, they're pushing you into Photoshop. Change is good I promis- you'll never look back at MS Paint again!

I even made the change from Dell Computers over to a Mac laptop! Very scary at first I will admit...

and Stampede... I don't even know what to say- these figures are amazing, stumbled across that Sherman thread earlier, didn't say anything but... wow man that's definitly something to shoot for! Really well done, all the way down to the detail (same with the figures!)

Dont worry about the goggles not being clear. they do get fogged up in the field. Nice paint job
