In need of a 1/35 M240B.....
Posted by modelchasm on Sunday, August 2, 2009 8:40 PM

I need to add a few weapons to my "arsenal" and one is a 1/35 M240B. I know that I can easily convert a "G" model found in Dragon's Modern Machine Gun set, but I don't want to. To my understanding, the Hobby Fan kit #048 is the only one that offers the 240B. Does anyone know of someone else that makes one? The only place that I can find the HF kit avail is too expensive for me, especially when all I'm going to use from it is the 240B and the M4s. I've already got plenty of modern storage equipment.

PK has a kit that carries a 240G, a short barrel shotgun and a couple of different M16/ M4 variants, but I've heard bad things about thier molds. If anyone can shed some light on any Propaganda Kompany experience, I'd appreciate that as well.

I'm also looking to add am M870 shotgun, maybe a couple fo different SAW variants (especially the collapsible stock and short barrel), and I'm also looking for optics. The more modern the better. Red dots, ACOGs, etc.

If anyone can help me in this quest, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

I honestly can't tell the difference between a 240B or G in 1/35- but I know you're the fine detail master- Verlin makes this kit

-pulled the box art off of Google. Not the best mold- standard Verlin corner cutting in places, no ammo belt or box mag, bipod molded in one piece under the barrel with a demarcation line that needs some good scribing.

Again- not sure if it's a G or B, but here it is on my 1/35 LAV

Don't mind the crazy TC- his recon mission just turned sour

I can't tell with the Verlinden figures, but the one mounted to the veh is a G model.

The G is mainly used by the Marines. But really the only difference btwn the B and G is that the G is missing the handguards/ heat shields at the end of the receiver .... so it looks like it has a longer barrel and gas tube. Grimmo's dio build has a B model goin' on from HF's kit, while I think that Arkhunter used a G model from another kit and added the heat shield w/ styrene. I just don't want to go to that trouble .... plus I want to recast it for future builds.

Here is a 240B ...

... and a 240G.

Here is the kit from PK. The 240B is on the bottom right. It looks like it would need a little "cleaning up."

I found this pic of a kit in my saved files, but I can't remember where I found it.

Its actually a pretty nice kit. Nice detail, etc. Plus, its got a 240B, a couple of M4s, a Barret, and the compact SAW .... and what looks to be some optics. If anyone recognizes it, PLEASE let me know. I'll be continuing to re-search for it as well. Man! ... I need to add notes to pics I save!

After looking at ore pictures of that VP Machine Gun Crew (above), I think that it has a 240G. Has anyone built/ own this kit? I'm curious as to the actual wepaon in the kit and how the pieces are cast?

Sorry for the misunderstanding- that 240B on my LAV was from the Verlin kit I showed you- switched out the figure with a SAW so I could stick the 240 on the LAV, Trump's kit didn't come with anything more than the green portion of that mount. And like I was saying about the cast- it's typical Verlin shortcut work, nice detail in places, but those heat shields don't look half as good as the one from that PK kit that you said needed cleaning up- and if you think that PK kit needed cleaning up, you'd cringe at the Verlin kit. It’s kind of chunky in general, with the paintjob I put onto it, I think it came out as doable for a 1/35 vehicle mounted gun, but you’ll notice my “mount” I scratchbuilt looks pretty bad, so my standards aren’t nearly up there with yours. I’d say go for the nicer cast off the bat- pay a little bit of extra $ just so you don’t have to do as much work prior to the cast so you can start making your copies sooner and from a more solid starting point. Wish I could help you ID that second picture, however I’ve never seen it before. Best of luck!

EDIT! No- you're right, the LAV gun is a 240G- it's hard to tell because, again, Verlin shortcut- there's no handguards on it, but they didn't mold the gap between the gas tube and the barrel, so it looks like it's just one solid piece, stay away from that kit if you want the 240B lol

I would love to get some of the PK weapons and see what they are like. I have seen a para version of the M249 made by tank, but i have made my own. Bit fiddly, but still looks the part.

Thats actually a MAG-58.

As for optics, Dragon have an ACOG in their US Army SF set. There is an M4 with an ACOG in AFV's Stryker setr and RWS set. Mousehouse Armour make a set of Austeyrs (F-88's) that have an ELCAN sight in it. A good source of modern weapons is the Blast M4, M16, and Sniper weapons set. (i have 1 of each). They are a bit chunky looking, but the most modern out there. Dragon, and especially verlinden, need to pick up their act and make modern weapon sets. If they go to the nth degree for their german kits, why cant they do that for their modern sets?

potato, poTAto .... whatever. The 240 has lots of names, just depends on who's using it I guess. Wiki has a nice little write-up about the 240 and all its nomenclatures ....

Thanks for the info on the optics. As far as the 240B goes, I'm looking for something like the M145 optic. Its probably easy enough to scratch, but again, w/ this, I'd rather not.

And yes .... Verlinden, Dragon, Tamiya ... and whoever else might be listening ... they definately need to step up their game w/ more accurate, modern stuff. I see more detailed/ improved WWII kits coming out all the time!

Blast's M4 set is by far (IMO) the best that's out there right now. The only M4 rifles that I've come across that match BLast come from AFV's M151 Remote CROW kit. I think it comes w/ 2-3 rifles .... not too bad for something that comes out of a kit box.

I'm still trying to decide what I want to do w/ this one. I always hate to buy a kit just for one or two weapons (like Dragon's MG set) as I know I wouldn't use the rest. Guess I'll figure something out.

No Camo, you're good ... and correct. However, its a G model as well. As the Marines are considered more "infantry based" than we are, they scrapped the heat shields IOT save a couple of pounds on the weapon ... the 240B is about 25lbs, minus ammo.

I just tried to make an order w/ PK (I figured it was my best chance ...), however, through the order I didn't get the option to pay for it!?! I sent them an email, but since they're in France, I figure I won't hear from them until tomorrow ... maybe.

If I don't, I'm thinking about going w/ Dragon's Marine set and converting the G to a B. Although, I can't find a picture of the parts or the sprues any where.

Well, I just got a money request from PK, so I got the resin kit paid for. I guess we'll let you guys know how the kit is when I receive it in a couple of weeks.

Here's a better pic of the kit from PK. I don't feel so bad about getting this one .... looks like I'll be able to use more of the weapons than if I went with a kit from Dragon or Verlinden.

... and handfull of M4s, SAWs, and 2x M240Bs, and a couple of other perks...

That is a nice looking kit- the stocks on those 2 SAWs look a bit odd, are they correct?

I'd think they'd look more like

And of the para version looks like one of the barrels is too long. Do they have those in standard and shortened lengths? I guess you could always switch the stock out. I like the options of the extended and entry lengths on the M4s- are those scopes modern-ish? They don't look like ACOGs. I'd say it's pretty nice tho- how much did that run you?

You should do one of these mods- the M4 stock on the Para version, that's interesting. Maybe not on your CBTS (unless you knew someone with this set up) but in the future, something to think about

(hey camo- you think that kid knows where Detroit is?? As least he has those cool pants...)

Psst, you're correct about the SAW stocks. They're not quiet right, but I wasn't planning on using them (the stocks) anyway. I've seen the collapsible stocks before, but we had the full para-versions.

The PK kit comes w/ 2x of these, but I'll convert the others as well. In my old crew we only had 2x of them, so yea .... you'll see them in the CBTS dio. Even though we never dismounted them (we had them in 2x turrets) I'll probably still add in a 240B just to add detail into the dio.

Sorry if i upset anyone by this:

"PICK UP YOUR ACT PEOPLE"

This was directed at Dragon and verlinden, and no-one else.

I dont mind having to scratch build stuff, but weapon parts suck as they are so fiddly. I was hoping someone would have done some modern weapons, like PK or Blast. I prefer to work in styrene rather than resin.

MC, the Elcan wepons sight in the Mousehouse kit is the same as the M145. (PM inbound)

Let us know how the PK set goes! I would love to get a couple for myself!

As for one of the para-minimi's having a long barrel, thats how a few of the Marines have been getting around lately. Para stock but full length barrel.

Thanks for the info- good to know. Also I don't think anyone took the "pick up your act" the wrong way, I almost did the first time I read it- but that's because I had only seen it quoted out of context in the following post.

The "pig" served its purpose ... and served it well. But the 240 is such a better weapon. I can't really speak for myself as the 249 was my weapon when I was enlisted. It doesn't seem like much of a change, but shortening the barrel and changing out the stock to the fully collapsible para stock saves a lot of weight ... or at least it feels like it. Awesome for an urban environment, but not so great for open stretches like the desert or the highway.

The 240s rate of fire isn't as fast as the 249, but when you consider the increased size of the rounds that its chunking down range, its a nice pay-off.

During my 2nd trip, as long as the gunners 1/2-arsed cleaned out the 240s when we got back we never had problems w/ them. But as w/ any weapon, neglect is bad thing ... I don't care if you can soak your rifle in mud before firing off 10 mags or not. Weapons come from the factory clean for a reason. When someone recommends mud/ sand as a lubricant, then I'll change my mind.

Grim - Don't worry. I don't think anyone took your statement negatively. I fully agree in that the modelling companies need to step up their games. As stated before, if they can come out w/ a "newly tooled" version of yet ANOTHER Tiger I, I think that they can at least try to sculpt some of the "new" weapons systems that are out there.

I just for the life of me, can't figure out why everyone is SO stuck on building WWII German stuff. Its got to be something like at least 85% of the market!!!

i think fsm years ago did a listing of tiger tanks as model kits. took up like 3 pages. yeah i know its the bread and butter of the industry...but how many versions of the same damn thing do you need???? every model maker out there makes a kit of the tank. god help you and i model if there wasnt a war going on for the least 8 years!!! we'd still be painting and making desert storm stuff!!! Laugh [(-D] still cant believe dragon only made one "modern" figure set instead of a few. whatever though, no sense crying over what ya cant fix anyway. Censored [censored].

The funny thing about those "modern" kits .... 9 times out of 10, "modern" means Desert Storm (no offense), but that's not exactly modern!?!

Hoo-ray for people like Hobby Fan, AFV, ... and maybe a LITTLE praise for Verlinden ... for making figures from at least the last 6-7 years. Verlinden is a stretch though ... like Stretch Armstrong stretch ...

Airborne Miniatures is working on a couple of REALLY modern figures (120mm), but I haven't heard when they expect to release them.

But yes, I agree completely.  I really wish Dragon released like 2008/09 modern US Soldiers.  Would definitely consider switching to 35th...

Stretch Armstrong is right... Verlin was amazing when they first hit the market- I've got a few of their OOP kits off eBay and WOAH! you'd think it was a different company. Once they hit mainstream, they're starting to just do enough to make a profit, all you pay for is the name now. They put out some nice poses, but the weapons and equipment- maybe if they made equipment figure-specific instead of the same generic stuff with every other figure kit they’ve got- it’d be nice if the packs actually fit the vests....

Anyway- I'm waiting on the AM 120 guys myself. I can't wait for them to drop- hope I'll have the $ saved up...
