Deceptive packaging from Tamiya?
Posted by Levon on Sunday, March 14, 2010 8:33 PM

Hello.  I recently purchased the new Tamiya Russian Infantry Anti-Tank team 1/35 scale set, item # 35306.  As I opened the package, I noticed that the weapons and the figures were molded seperately.  The weapons look nice and crisp, but the figures looked terrible.  Lots of flash, and poor detail, not typical of the standard Tamiya 1/35 scale figures.  The figures are in a reseable plastic bag.  Products that Tamiya have been releasing using old ICM figures come in this bag.  The same kind the limited edition Tamiya Modern Elite Infantry Accessory Set, and the Modern Soviet Infantry set (Afghan-Soviet War) come in.  I just think it is unfair that Tamiya is going to sell old crappy ICM figures, and not properly label that on the box.  They did the same thing for their recently released German 3.7 FLAK 37 Anti-Aircraft Gun w.Crew.  Those figures in the package are ICM, but they come with Tamiya helmets.  However, Tamiya never tells you that on the package.  At least they printed that on the limited edition sets.  If I knew the figures were made by another company, I would not have shelled out over twenty bucks for this model set.  Not trying to be a pain, but I feel this is deceptive advertising.  Anybody notice this also? Do you agree this is deceptive advertising? Is there a way to contact Tamiya and give them a piece of my mind?  Thanks for your time.

I don't think it is really deceptive.  A lot of model companies re-package other companies molds.  Tamiya packages Italeri and ICM, Accurate Miniatures old Monogram kits, Airfix and Heller have exchanged molds since Hornby bought out both companies, Italeri and MPM / Special Hobby have each others kits boxed, Trumpeter and Hobbycraft., RevellAG releases Hasegawa, Italeri, old Matchbox, and Monogram kits... the list goes on.  Best thing to do is ask about the quality of a kit before you buy it.  At least the ICM figures are better than Tamiya's own older figure kits that are still available.

The only company I use for styrene figs is DML, and even they are hit and miss with their figs (with the rare exception of a few Tamiys fig sets)....if you want really good 35th scale figs you almost have to buy resin, IMO...

Only this month I started painting my first figures, two modern armor crew figs from Dragon. They look great: the faces especially have very crisp detail, correct scale, moderate expressions, and look different one from the other. I want to start putting figs on all my kits, so I ordered some Trumpeter desert storm Marines and a Tamiya WW2 mortar crew for upcoming projects. The uniforms and the equipment look good enough, but the faces! They look they are patterned after gargoyles! Think I will be sticking with newer DML kits.

To tell you the truth, I love tamiya's allied figures because of their poses but there isn't a lot of variety of sets. DML has so much to chose from. Most of them are german figures, sadly a turnoff for allied modelers like me. But what upsets me about tamiya figures is that they are molded in dark green plastic unlike DML who mold them in grey so it is easier to look at details. I don't know, both companies are good but I'm leaning towards DML
