The "bandoleer" seen across the soldeirs body in the lower photo is actually his greatcoat. That was the standard way it was carried by Soviet troops whenit was not worn

If you dont mind using enamels and have access to Humbrol paints, two color suggestions I can recommend are HU 84 Mid Stone (it is not the RAF shade), or  HU 83 Ocre. Both give a nice Khaki Yellow shade. Also, you will want to paint the puttees (the leg wrappings) in a similar shade to the uniform.

On the second figure up leaning against the corner of the turret, I used a combination of those Humbrol colors for his uniform top and bottom. The other figures have the Vallejo shade of Russian Uniform Green and Polly S Russian Earth Brown for the Great Coat and Rain Cape.

Osprey makes a great series of reference books for soldiers and their equipment in their Men At Arms books

These two would cover your reference needs

This is reasonably good if you can find a copy.  It might be out of print.  Lots of color illustrations and informative text.

I've yet to paint Russian figures, although I do have some in my stash, so in that regard can't advise what paint or brand to use.  I'm guessing now you only give your figures one coat of paint and leave out the aspect of shading as you made no response about my suggestion of adding an ochre wash.  For that yellow shade you are striving for, maybe try dark yellow - usually reserved for German armour.  Vallejo has this colour, so you might already have it in your paint bottle collection.

Again though, different brands will have slight differences in this shade.

Looks pretty close to me, but yes khaki is the way to go.  There are various shades of khaki, google the colour and one will find quite a variety.  Is Vallejo the best one - no, not if you want the yellow spectrum of khaki.  I wouldn't hold the box art, nor to a lesser degree, printed art work as the definite shade either - the printing process can give a lot of leeway as to what the client expects as a finished product.

On my comp the bandolier looks pretty close to the uniform colour you have. If you prefer, maybe a light wash of yellow ochre will give you the shade you want.

As for a flat look, I suppose some paints are better than others, but I find hand brushing along with washes will eventually bring a slight sheen to the figure, not to mention the mere handling of it with your fingertips.  What I do is a final layer of clear flat sprayed onto the figure.

Hey i have these russian soldiers im working on right now and i read somewhere that the color to use is khaki vallejo.

I painted them up and they look..... well not exactly right....

It seems like they need to be more yellow. not just that but the finish is wayyy to shiney.

did i get the color right , do i need to fix this ?Not only on the box are the colors way more yellow but all the research i have done leads to way more yellow color.  anyone have any suggestions on the paint to use? preferably with a good flat finish
