If your first coat is acrylic it is NOT a primer but simply a base colour, quiet a difference there to me.

Not sure what is available in your area.

Best head to the LHS and get a good model primer, I use the primers made by Gunze as they are the best where I am located.

Once the kit is primed your paint sticks to the primer and no longer to the underlying material. As long as your primer is comaptible with your paints and the Vinyl you should be ok.
I prime all my kits and use the very same paints and methods regardless if the kit is made from Plastic, Vinyl, Resin, Wood or White Metal.

You can layer different tpes of paints, best get a chart that shows which colour goes on top of which. Also laying a clear coat between different colours will help and allow you to strip one colour only if you are careful.

Model Museum,
Thanks for the response. Can you give more specific advise on the primer and paint. As I said the directions call for the use of acrylics, so can I use enamels or laquers for the primer without damage to the vinyl? Is it possible to prime with acrylics and finish paint with other than acrylic paints?
Thanks,
Joe

You can use CA to glue Vinyl pieces, I prefer 2-part epoxy glue as I feel that the CA tries too hard and thus is not compatible with the softer Vinyl as a bonding medium.
Same holds true, IMO, for the putty.
At the most I use small drops of CA to hold the pieces on place while I work with the other glue.

You can prime the vinyl kit and it is actually recommended regardless of what type of colours you are going to be using.

Also adding weight into the lower areas of the kit will give it substance and alow it to stand easier. This also prevents sacking of the kit if it somehow gets warmed(exposure to sunlight, etc).

HTH.

need help
Posted by Panther 44 on Sunday, January 16, 2005 4:05 PM
Hello all,
Need help with painting vinyl figures.
This is my first attempt to assemble/paint a vinyl model, so I need help with some questions.
The instructions say to use CA glue. Can I use an accelerator to set the CA without damaging the the vinyl?
Suppossed to use acrylics to paint the model. Is there any way to prime the model and use either enamels or lacquers?
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Joe
