Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, March 21, 2006 12:16 AM
Hi all this is my first post on this site ,so a quick intro , i am  fairly new to modeling and my main area of interest is WWII figures and wepons in 1/72 scale , I am from Western Australia .My question is,  is there a site or place I can find some basic colours recomendations  for Tamiya paints , IE : I know that Field grey seems to be the best for German uniforms but what about some of the other armys etc , I am just after a few pointers until I get more practise under my belt , also what is the best base colours for a concrete bunker . Thanks for any help kiwi Patrol

Since you are new to the hobby, if you can, get used to something other than Tamiya. It does not brush and this will frustrate the heck out of you when you do figures. It's also not matched to any standards so you will need to do a lot of mixing to match any standard. Some people love how it airbrushes, but I have not been happy with the results of the current formula. If you want to stay with acrylics, the best are the Vallejo/Andrea lines

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

kiwi,

I agree with aj, Tamiya can be a pain to brush paint.  If you are going to use it, make sure you allow it to set fully between coats, otherwise it will continue to lift and become an exercise in frustration.  Mixing them for other different colors is no big deal as long as you have a color wheel to give you a hand and you understand it.  I have mixed Tamiya with itself as well as others.  aj and others swear by vallejo acrylics, I myself use different brands, Tamiya, liquitex, and pollys to name a few.  Its whatever works best for you.  Bunkers, I would imagine are typically concrete (some shade of grey) in color with at least some attempt to blend them in to whatever background they currently occupy (whether through foliage, dirt, or paint).  You can probably find some color photos of examples on the internet.  Hope this helps, and by the way, welcome aboard.Smile [:)]

concrete color is best mixed by using Tamiya Flat White and Tamiya Chrome silver but if you get any TriStar kits they have excellent paint guide and it shows the different companies paints (I.E Tamiya, Gunze sagnyo and humbrol)(well only those three)

On the workbench: Dragon 1/350 scale Ticonderoga class USS BunkerHill 1/720 scale Italeri USS Harry S. Truman 1/72 scale Encore Yak-6
