Up Yer Kilt! Pics of a 93rd Highlander at Lucknow, 1857

Greetings

I have added some pictures of my highlander that was painted in artists acrylics. It is a United Empire Miniatures figure in the 130mm scale. This figure got me a gold and silver award at two different model competitions here in South Africa. I hope you enjoy the pics. Let me know what you guys think.

Great job. Congrats on the awards. Looks good. The tarten looks very clean.

A technique I learned years ago, but have yet to try, is to use solid colored decal sheet and cut out the different elements of the pattern and then put the decals over the area where the pattern is to be. Then you paint over the decals. It gives you a nice, clean pattern to paint over, and makes for sharp, even detail. You seal it with clear coat to level out the surface, to hide the decals. It's especially effective with heraldry and flag emblems.

As I say, I've actually never tried it, but a guy in one of the clubs I used to belong to did some amazing work with this method. It's nice, because the decals conform to the compound surfaces of clothing, and so when you paint over it, your patterns conform properly.

It's easy to see why you took Silver and Gold! Wow, the tartan looks amazing.

Your post heading reminds me of the time I asked a kilt wearing Scots friend what he had under his kilt, and he said in the broadest accent he could master "Nothing you could handle, laddie!"

So long folks!

Another outstanding figure. The awards you got are well earned.
What happened to the kilt; it's got a satin shine to it?
I hate when it happens to my figures: you do an outstanding work, one like you never managed before, and then the thing turns out shiny.

BTW first thing I thought seeing this figure was: "What the heck is Austrian Emperor Franz-Joseph doing in a kilt?!"
Just kidding, but the figure's face really looks like the emperor's.

The character in the face is great, as for the tartan, just the thought of attempting it makes me dizzy. Your rewards were surely well deserved.

He kinda looks like Sean Connery too, in 'The Man Who Would Be King'.

Great work! there are somethings i'm nervous to tackle with painting, like black or white clothing, but you seem to have nailed it here.

Thanks to all of you for your positive comments! Much appreciated. I can see the resemblence to Franz-Joseph! Weird! I have also been told from various family members and friends that he also looks like Sean Connery!
