A technique I learned years ago, but have yet to try, is to use solid
colored decal sheet and cut out the different elements of the pattern
and then put the decals over the area where the pattern is to be. Then
you paint over the decals. It gives you a nice, clean pattern to paint
over, and makes for sharp, even detail. You seal it with clear coat to
level out the surface, to hide the decals. It's especially effective
with heraldry and flag emblems.
As I say, I've actually never tried it,
but a guy in one of the clubs I used to belong to did some amazing work
with this method. It's nice, because the decals conform to the compound
surfaces of clothing, and so when you paint over it, your patterns
conform properly.
