Posted by rudedog on Thursday, September 14, 2006 1:07 PM
While watching band of brother reruns,in a latter episode showed a G.I. & a german soldier sharing traffic duty. The german solder had a raincoat of sorts, but morst importantly, he had a very large pendant around his neck,&around his chest. The chest part looked to be pewter with a gold eagle on it.To top things off,I picked up the DML set of Germanfeldendarmerie for a dio i'm doin, and they have them on also !the back of box instructions says nothing about them. Can anyone please tell me what this was ?I've looked thru my ref library & can't find em. Going insane thanks, rudedog

They were a vestigial remnant of medievil to protect the neck. By the 18th century, they had evolved to what your figures are wearing and were commonly used by officers to denote being on duty. They were used a good deal by native Americans as decorations as well. By WWII, the germans were about the last army to be using them.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

I read an article long time ago about it and it mentioned that Germany had a police force that supported the military in foreign lands and they wore those things around their necks.

Also called Ringkragen... bacically displayed to show wearer had a speacial duty. From what I see, there were 6 types:
-Fahnentrager
-Feldgendarmerie
-Bahnhofswache
-Kommandantur
-Feldjagerkorps
-Feldherrnhalle

Hope this helps

I don't agree with that, anyone can put anything on Wikepedia, people could just be making stuff up or guessing from the tiny bit of research they may have done

People could be doing that here too, what's your point?  Did you even look at the link?

You have a point, but someone would have to keep coming back here telling people the wrong thing, and someone else would then tell you the right thing. Its pretty unlikley every single person here is a Censored [censored] artist.

Wikipedia is a great resource, as long as it gets policed properly. There have been cases in the past where obvious disinformation was planted. I see no reason to believe that the article is incorrect.

I agree.  It's kind of an intellectual "buyer beware."  This is why there are sources cited.   Wikipedia does a pretty good job of keeping things straight considering the magnitude of info there.  Also, they post when citation is needed or if there is suspected inaccuracies.  Not bad for a free service.

I didn't notice anyone not playing nice.  Check it out, double negative.

Wiki is nice for getting quick ideas about a given subject, but because of the aforementioned reasons and relative small amount of information present on the given subject, it is not useful as a real research tool.  I would have to say that the balance of the articles contain verifiable facts.  I always check the discussion pages to see what criticism users have posted.

No, but his is a specialised forum, where people I feel are less likely to post rubbish than in an area where there is much higher traffic (Wikepedia)

Sign - Off Topic!! [#offtopic] Wikipedia is a growing concern, and has gone through some growing pains to get to where it is today. While I am a fan of Wikipedia, Ialways check out alternate sources for accuracy. Then again, I ALWAYS check out alternate sources of information, regardless of the original source. According the Nature Magazine Study, it is at least the equal of Encylopedia Brittanica, and the better of Encarta.

So long folks!

You got, Bill.  Multiple resources is always the best way to go.  That's why they make sure students use so many resources of various types when they write their papers and make speaches.

Encarta sucks.

Well not all of them :) Even my 13 year old tells me what a joke that place is. Wikipedia where all you have to have is someone agree with you to make it true Hehehehe.

But really it may not all be wroung but enough of it is to give it a bad name. There are better places to get info on the net then Wikipedia, and really its true I read it on Wikipedia :)

I know they have changed there rules about posting on there site so its harder to post non true info

Peace

Well, whatever....

They are gorgets, Rudedog.  Sorry that your thread got hijacked with all this "reliable sources" nonsense.  I hope you were able to get something out of all this beside the idea that everyone's a professional fact-checker these days and deeply entrenched in acadamia.

You know what I was thinking about this thread the other day wondering if I could find it and here it is.  I was wondering because I found out the South Carolina State Flag has a gorget on it.  I always wondered why we had an Islamic symbol on it then found out it represented a piece of armor and lo and behold it's a gorget.  Well here is you another piece of useless triva.
