WWII Soviet Flight Suit Colors?
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, July 22, 2007 11:12 AM

I was wondering if anyone would happen to know what the basic flight suit colors for WWII Soviet Pilots were or if there is a web site that would describe or show what they would have looked like. I am working on a Yak-3 w/ a pilot figure and have not been able to find anything. Please Help!

Thanks,

Using Osprey's book "Soviet Aces of WWII" as a reference, it would appear that Soviet WWII pilots mainly wore the standard Red Army uniform of breeches/gymnastroika with various length brown or black leather jackets. Naval Aviation had a black one piece cloth coveralls for the first portion of the war. Of course, based on both color and black and white period photos, there appears to be quite a variety in the color/shade of the "standard" Red Army uniform material, varying from khaki-mustard to olive khaki to a dark brown olive drab shade. Only the cut of the uniform itself appears to have been standardized.

EDIT- also try these websites for general Soviet VVS info

Stikpusher,

Wow, Very informative Stuff. I was leaning toward the dark brown olive drab or a lighter olive based on some video I saw on the History Channel. Looks like they were pretty close. I also visited both the websites you recommended. Both were great! I now have more info to use while painting and detailing my Kit. I am not sure if many people have wanted to waste their time with the Yak-3 kit I purchased, because it lacks in most details. You might have seen one of these kits around. It came as a bagged kit from RED STAR (kind of reminds me of older airfix kits) and is very simple (The detail on the pilot are pretty good though). There is no date on the package, but this has to be older than ten years. The scale is 1/72nd. The parts need work to get them to match up and there is virtually no cockpit (Seat, partial floor, & Stick). I would not rate the model very well, but I took it on as a project. I am custom detailing most of areas where it is lacking (Lots of sheet & rod styrene), but since this is such a small scale, I am not trying to go overboard with it. I have been taking digital photos as I have worked and when I get finished I will post them (If it turns out OK).

Thanks again for the help,

Captain Cookie

Captain,

Glad I could be of help here. I have a soft spot for most Soviet subjects: aircraft, figures, or armor, WWII or Cold War. I suppose because they were the boogieman during my formative years. The Yak 3 kit sounds interesting. My hat is off to you for working on any kit in 72nd and getting into that sort of detail, small stuff and all that. I look forward to seeing your post and pics on this build. I have done some Zvezda/Red Star kits, but all have been armor in 35th scale. A bit crude during the build but overall I like the finished results. If you like the Soviet subjects also, I have to suggest giving some of the ICM ( or whatever they are calling themselves today) a look.
