I built this model about 6 months ago now :

It was my first attempt at something not mechanised and my first use of water effects.

The completed page can be found here :

I really like the ground work, especially the water. I've never been able to get the clear edging you achieved. The critter looks a bit bland to me. Yeah, I know, how can anyone criticize the color of a dino? You've laid the paint down nicely, but given the current belief that dino's are closely related to modern birds, I'd have chosen a more lively palette or at least some sort of camo pattern to help him (her?) hide in its environment and make a more interesting display.

Nice one.  The water effect worked out very well.

I know exactly what you mean. I wanted stereotypical Dino colours as it was my first one and it was pretty much a test kit. I'm currently working on a 'Raptor (albeit slowly) and plan to use a more elaborate pattern on the skin of that one.

Thank you both for your comments!

I'm also working on some raptors. You can see them here. Certainly not definitive, but scroll down and you'll find some discussion or at least pictures of what the current thinking on raptors is.

Having a dino expert ( a real one that is, PhD and all) in the club made things pretty interesting. He brought in all sorts of skulls, bones, scaled-down skulls that had been put throught the Univerisitys rapid prototyper machine....we never knew what he was going to bring in next!   I had some discussion with him about coloration and it leaned towards birdlike coloration. Now, there are some pretty lively birds out there and some pretty dull ones.  Ray Rimmels excellent work Building Model Dinosaurs tends towards the brighter fighting colors seen on birds in full plume and I worked towards this end when I painted my Rathalos figure, assuming her armor is made from dinosaur/dragon skin.

My only comment on the well done setting and base is that during this period only tall grasses and other monocots were growing. Instead of diciduous trees, palms and other frondy trees would be growing.  I made my own and while not perfect they were tall enough to be interesting while letting the main peice dominate the scene :)

Very cool and different than what we usually see here! The water effect is really great! That melted-bead water stuff looks like it's the *&%$ to use!

It sure is. It wouldn't be so bad if I used a thicker piece of plastic to keep it in. It was infortunate that the "water" was still boiling hot when I poured it near the edge, causing the plastic frame to melt almost instantly.
