Looks good m8, but the manfacter's got one thing glaringly wrong, Patton carried only one peacemaker, his other pistol was a Mdl 19 S&W .357 mag.

Just my two cents, but how about a 48-star US Flag background?

And a card below the base that reads:

"There is one great thing that you men will all be able to say after this war is over and you are home once again. You may be thankful that twenty years from now when you are sitting by the fireplace with your grandson on your knee and he asks you what you did in the great World War II, you WON'T have to cough, shift him to the other knee and say, "Well, your Granddaddy shoveled sh*t in Louisiana." No, Sir, you can look him straight in the eye and say, "Son, your Granddaddy rode with the Great Third Army and a Son-of-a-Godd*mned-B*tch named Georgie Patton!"

Correct: the .357 was blued with ivory grips.  The boots he is wearing are on display at the Patton Museum.  His jodphurs would actually have a slight pink cast to them.  They were called "pinks".

Do not confuse his helmet liner with his steel pot.  He wore both.  Only the helmet liner was lacquered.

Nice work on one of my personal favorites of all times.

Could'nt disagree more I find deep tones on the face distracting and unnatural, all the more in larger scales.  Your balance is just right, very lifelike and is'nt that what we're shooting for?.   It is a matter of fact that Patton wore a high gloss helmut liner when in formals or while addressing the troops. Asfor the buttons & buckle thats a matter of taste.

Steve

The future on the helmet looks good. I like the red background myself

I know the feeling of "I just want to finish"!!! And don't worry about us, if we didn't like it, well....

Nice job

Just a few pics to show the General finished. Quick, simple base.

Red backing...

Blue backing...

Back to red, liked it better...

Some close ups...

Some fun in iPhoto...

Sorry to bore you with more. Just wanted to get it on a base, post it, and be done with it. I'm ready to move on to my next project.

Appreciate all of the positive feedback. Won't mind some negative, so feel free to let me have it.

Thanks, staghound and redleg.

Museum quality might be pushin' it, but I'll take it Blush [:I]Tongue [:P]

I think I will brush on some future to the steel pot. I still have some dullcoating to do. Need to bring down the shine on his jacket. Thanks, guys, for taking the time to comment.

staghound, I tried to paint his boots, as well as all of his leather, as aged, but well taken care of. Not sure how well I pulled it off. I know he was a stickler for sharpness.

One of the parts I'm unsure of is his tie; I've seen pics of both his light, and darker, olive drab tie. Not sure if it coincided with the African and European campaigns, respectively. Went with darker for color contrast.

I know that most experienced figure painters are sick of looking at Patton figures. This is only my second 120mm figure that I've done, so had to get a Patton outta the way.

Steve

Looks great, love the details

As for the helmet thing...the old steel pot was a combo of the pot and a helmet liner. What Patton wore with his dress uniform was a highly shined helmet liner. The old steel pot would have a rough finish but the liner would be smooth. Also the steel pot had the clips on the side to hold the chin strap. As you can see by your photo, no clips.

The typical thing used for the high shine would be to varnish the helmet liner. After a couple of coats, then it was just a matter of keeping it polished.

The model looks great the way it is but if you want to do more well...simple is to do the helmet with one or two coats of future...more work would be to carefully smooth the helmet with sandind, repaint and future....If it was me I would just future it.

Nice job Thumbs Up [tup]

Wow! Museum quality! I think the helmet could be even shinier.

Let's get to the important details ---- Did you paint the soles of his boots as new or worn?

Thanks... the rings were, of course, molded on. I just painted them very carefully with one of my newer, trusty 000 brushes. The one on the left hand is the ring, I assumed, depicting his West Point ring. They say it had a topaz gem, his birthstone. I used Steel Blue so it has a bit of a glint in person. The right hand has his wedding band, and I can't remember what the pinky ring is. The paint I used for the gold is Liquid Leaf Classic Gold, a Hobby Lobby find.

Patton's helmet was, apparently, diligently shined to reflection standards by his orderlies.

My figure's helmet looks kinda rough in close ups. Didn't even notice until the pics were taken.

IMO I'd leave the helmet gloss,Patton preferd the "steel pot" over the "bus driver,s" cap for his dress uniform and it was alway's polished same go's for the buckel and button's.

Beautiful work, far beyond anything I ever expect to do.

One comment, unrelated to your artistry:  Can't tell for sure from the photo angles, but it looks like he's carrying a matched set of Colt .45 Single Action Army revolvers.  It's certainly not your fault, but I don't think that's correct.  During WWII, on occasions when he wore two guns, Patton usually carried the .45 SAA that he used to kill some of Pancho Villa's bandits on one side.  On the other, he carried a 1930's model .357 Magnum revolver.  I remember picking that little factoid out of a memoir from one of his staff.  Just sayin....

I'm no expert, but he certainly looks pretty darn good to me. His jacket and riding crop are very good, they look like leather. Very well done over all.My 2 cents [2c]

120mm Patton **FINISHED w/ BASE 3/1/08***
Posted by SteveM on Sunday, February 24, 2008 5:31 PM

Of course, I don't notice the glaringly obvious goofs until I shoot pics and post on the web... I need to get his cuff buttons painted. Have been staring at him for weeks, don't know how I missed 'em.

He's base-painted in Vallejo and Reaper acrylics, shaded and highlights in oils. Let me know what you think... if I've missed anything else, feel free to speak up.

Thanks for lookin' in...
