Decals
Posted by philly on Sunday, January 11, 2009 7:54 AM

Hello to all,

I have some Testors decal bonder. After I spray it on, do I still have to soak it in my water solution? Can I still use a decal stting solution? Also, I have several decals that are no good. Where can I go to get a posable replacement? Mostly star wars.

Thanks,

D.

Hi philly. I'm not sure what you mean. Where did you put the decal bonder, and to what purpose?

Normally, I soak the decal in warm water just long enough to get it to separate from the carrier paper. I put down some decal setting solution in the appropriate place, then fix the decal over that, pressing it down w/ a damp q-tip to remove excess moisture. If the surface is very uneven, I put some decal solvent on top, to help it snug down. Does that help?

For old Star Wars markings, I just mask the model and airbrush the correct colors on. Usually looks better than the decals. I don't know your circumstances, however. Do you own an airbrush?

here is the deal my friends.

Water slide decals require water to activate the adhesive.

Decal set/pre/bonder whatever you use, is just a prep, so it doenst slide all over when you place it down.  Personally, I dont use mine (I have some).

I do use decal softener, if you dont know, this melts the decal so it goes into recesses, over raised areas, and around curves without leaving bends.

D.,

The Testors decal bonder is meant to seal the homemade inkjet decals you print with the decal system Testors sells:

The name is a bit misleading-- it sounds like something you use to make the decals stick better to the model!  It should be called "decal sheet sealer" and there would be less confusion.

It can be used to "save" old decals that are cracking, but I believe Microscale's Liquid Decal Film is a superior product in this respect.  You could also use Future to strengthen old decals.
