Doctor Who "Welcome Aboard" (Airfix)
Posted by Jonathan Mock on Monday, May 18, 2009 5:27 PM

Change of pace for me, both in terms of scale and subject (and actually making something for a change).

I'm no figure modeller and 1/12 scale is pretty daunting but the size gave me a chance to try a few things, least not a subtle finish to the figures (from the outset I didn't want an overdone "drag queen" look). Taking a cue from a friend who works in visual effects I laid down layers of shadows for the skin tones using the airbrush, which gives them some depth, and then evened them out with a top coat. I painted the eyes a pale grey (to avoid too stark a look), picked out the pupils and iris then gave them a wash of thinned red so they'd pick up the corners. The hair looks glossy, this was later matted down with varnish after picking out the details.

Clothing was painted the same way using pre-shading with the airbrush, then a very light dry-brushing with paler shades.

TARDIS goes together very fast - its the Ikea variaety, all flat-packed - and is surprisingly large at 1/12 scale. Some gentle shading and little weathering lifted the detail.

All told it was about a weeks work in the evenings, most of that on the figure painting, great fun.

Nicely done.Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Usually when I see this kit done the colors and shading are way overboard and sloppy.

This is a nice kit.  I have it myself, just waiting to get the urge to build it.  I'm just alittle daunted at the fact I'm going to have to use stickers for the 'Police:Call Box' sign....  Yours looks quite good (though the sculpting on martha's face sucks) I love your skin tone on the doctor, looks perfect

What about scanning the decals than printing the graphics on mylar or clear film with a diffuser behind it and back lighting it.

Well Sir Jonathan Mock, just brilliant work there, really looks the part, every bit as good as the box art on the kit, seriously brilliant work.

Very nice paintwork. Subtle but convincing, which is hard to do. Excellent work.
