I built a similar ship, Polar Lights 1/350 scale NX-01.  I used the Aztec Dummy vinyl masks and they worked very well.  I have the 1/350 Enterprise in the box waiting to go, with a set of Aztec Dummy masks for it, too.  These masks seem more complex and may be a lot more work to apply correctly than the previous NX-01.

As far as lighting goes, you will be in for a BIG job, and if you only have basic wiring skills from model railroad work, I would not recommend you attempt it.  It's not just soldering, but there is routing of wiring and how to mount parts to figure out.  Most of those big light kits are just a big collection of loose components with cryptic instructions that require an electrical engineering degree to figure out.  I bought a set for the NX-01, and after studying what I got for almost $300, decided to send it back for a refund.  The model looks fine without the lights, and face it, how often are you going to light it up and stare at it, once the novelty wears off?  I don't mean to be negative, just practical.

I did this lighting on my own for a lot less than $169.

I used something like 150 LEDs and did all the wiring and soldering for about $60-$70.  I also have the DML Stobe and NAV light kit.

This was my first lighting job on a kit, too.  I'm still working on it, though.

I'm thinking the $169 will be easer to pass by my wife that $279. Maybe if I start shoveling snow around the neighborhood or mow the lawn myself instead of paying my son I can earn some extra cash.

I'll take a look at this, too.

Thanks for the info!

Not build that kit or have lit a kit but try running a search for Swanny's 1/350 Romulan BOP.  He's lighting it and not using a kit.  You might could try a "conversation" (private message) with him.

Hello,

I have high aspirations for this kit.  I was wondering if anyone has built the kit using the including Aztec Decals and if you were happy with the results.  I am considering ordering painting masks from Aztek Dummy.

Also, I want to light the model and have basic soldering and wiring skills from dabbling in model railroading years ago.  I’ve found what looks like a nice lighting kit from trekmodeler.com but the DIY version is $169 and the “ready to go” is almost $300.  Anyone had any experience lighting this model?  Guides to “hobby” LED lighting and circuits are hard to find.  In the recent issue of FineScale there is a link to buildingultinmatemodels.com, but his $25.00 dollar guide appears to be for a larger kit and I think the results in his photos look toy like.  I’m trying to approximate the studio model.
