Finemolds X-wing 1/48 with some cut away sections
Posted by Bar74 on Monday, April 29, 2013 1:15 PM

Hi folks,

Last time I've had anything to do with modeling I was attempting a scratchbuilt Demoiselle airplane in 1/8 scale using brass and wood. That turned out to be a little bit ambitious. I still might continue with that but needed something else. So I still had an X-wing laying around and when I saw Diego Quijano's X-wing I knew I wanted to do something similar. An X-wing with some parts revealed (I like Diego's funny take on the whole idea of an intercepted X-wing) on a base of some sort and something with lights but probably not lights on the X-wing but some type of construction lights on a platform, lighting the X-wing. Here's a start of the first parts.

I love Sci-Fi too and you can't go wrong with SW, so I will be watching this one!  Great stuff so far!

Here's the laser cannon and wing section with some detail and paint! Paint on the wing needs some work, I'm using brushes (no airbrush), have to improve some. But eventhough it could be much better in terms of detail and cleanness, I don't want to spend 100 hours on this. I want to spend as much time on the base and how the X-wing will sit (in spotlights) as the model, well kindof. Hope you like sofar. Oh and Eventhough I have some reference I'm basically making stuff up as I go, won't be exactly like how they came out of the "Incom Corporation" factory :)

Looks great so far!  As for accuracy.....it's Sci-Fi!  There are no right or wrongs, just what you come up with.  I think it looks great!  Are you going to scratchbuild a base?

Thats looking sweet, and if you can't use your imagination on a build like this, where can you use it.

Thanks guys. Now here's the thing that's crucial about the scene, I wanted the X-wing to be in "attack postion" , meaning wings unfolded, but that creates a problem with it sitting on the ground (landing gear under wings is at an angle). The X-wing I told you about from Diego solved this problem by putting the x-wing on jacks. Now I'm thinking, either I come up with some kind of garage-like base for the X-wing to sit on (like a lift) or I close the wings shut (which ruins the view on the cut away wing section) and let it sit on its landing gear. Or cut the lower wing off completely. Not sure yet. Logically speaking the X-wing was shut down or crashed so probably had no time to deploy it's landing gear? I am thinking the base should represent some kind of reverse engineering by the empire, taking the X-wing apart piece by piece (I still like the idea of some huge contruction type flood lights on tripods lighting the model). Oh and I cut the rebel pilot up in 3 pieces and glued him back together, he is either dead or seriously ill in this scene (he's leaning forward, head down) :) Or maybe I'll just leave him out. So much to decide! (fun though)

By the way I did some Star Wars models some years ago  (work consisted mostly of integrating led lighting and paint job), you can find them here and here. A Finemolds Y-wing and a Revell Millennium Falcon. That's why with this X-wing I want to focus on the scene, the base and the custom parts instead of tedious fiberglass fiddling in cockpits.

I'll keep you guys posted, next up is an engine cut away and side of the body cut away (forward of the cockpit showing the missile launch tube exposed).

Here's a short update, cut the fuselage open and build the 2 torpedo tubes. Supposed to be loads more stuff in there eventually, visible because of the missing side of the body. Also, a cut open engine, turbine? (don't know what you call that part ) with some pieces of styrene turned on a drill stand. Painted most parts in a egg shell like base colour. Using acryllics for colour is an issue overall, won't really work that well using a brush.
