Star Wars AT-AT Imperial Walker 1/48 Scratchbuilt
Posted by Movie Kits on Saturday, June 21, 2014 6:03 AM

Here you have our first project now in progress. We've been trying hard to find an appropiate model of one of our most beloved vehicles but, after a long debate, we've finally decide to build it from scratch.

May be it's not perfect, but we are working on it with all our care and dedication.

We are pleased to show you an advance of out AT-AT 1/48 Imperial Walker which, in a few weeks time, will be finished. It comes with some details 3D-designed, such as the belly central piece and the main cannons, which are ment to be retractables and simulate real laser shots.

As always, we'd appreciate very much any contribution during the process.

Cheers!!

UPDATE 1

The model is almost finished, but we're still trying to figure out how build the few final details. In the pictures, you can see the Allen screws we used to join the legs and the belly. We haven't decided whether to make molds with or without them yet.

The two main central parts were made from 1/24 Harrier engines and 1/144 Saturn V pieces in the original model. For our 1/48 model we can't used them because they seemed to be a bit large, so we had to designed them using 3D Studio Max.

We made progress with the head, it's not finished yet because we need to use some extra putty and sandpaper in roder to make it perfect, but at least you should appreciate how it could look like finally.

We are pretty happy of how it's finally looking. We have to work on the interior parts after finishing the head, and the side cannons will be our last challenge.

Hope you like it.

Cheers!!

Yep, that is awesome!

This is mr favourite vehicle from Star Wars. I wish I could find a kit of it. I think Fine Molds used to make one.

Is this a one off? Or do you plan on mass producing them?

It is very impressive, and whether or not it is accurate, it is still better than any of the scale kits available!

How big is this model? You should place some standard sized common item in the photo so we can see the size.

Thanks CML, our first idea was to build two ATAT for our dioramas in Hot and Endor, but, since we started working on this little buddies, many people have told us to cast them, so we'll work on a limited edition. We are waiting to be able to show the master pieces in two weeks and receive petitions.

Stay in touch mate ;)

Cheers!!!

Thanks a lot Rob, we've been working for like a year on this model, exhausting!!!

You're right, we forgot to put some common item near the ATAT, we'll fix that in the next pics but, to give you an idea, it's around 40 cm tall.

Something as simple as a can of soda or a smart phone in the shot would help.

Impressive build!

Rob: At 1/48 scale and 40cm tall their AT-AT would be taller than the 80's Kenner toy AT-AT.

Movie Kits: The metal bolts fastening the main joints are the best solution for the strength required vrs. scale accuracy. You may need to cut your own threads through a steel disc and grind the nuts down lower to completely hide. Stop by a metal fabrication / machine shop to bounce ideas off them.

Very epic build. One of the best features is the legs. All of the Kenner `toy`versions get the legs wrong. An AT-ATs legs originate from the centre of the `body`and have extra joints. You did that part justice, very cool!!

Man, please come with us, we definitely need your expertise to finish this stuff!!! :) Yeah, you are mentioning the right way to give the model some strengh, but we'll evaluate that once made the molds and the resin replicas. We're trying to use light resin, so we'll see then. If it doesn't work, we'll buy your comment. Keep in touch!!

Hi friends,

We’ve tried to put the replica & master pieces together, so you can notice the details of the ships, planes, tanks, Formula 1 and other hand-maded model pieces added to your AT-AT. We honestly believe the Saturn V 1/200 pieces have been specially well casted.

Now it's time to build our replicas and start painting!!!

As always, all the information about the process here: moviekits.net/star-wars-at-at-148-scratchbuilt-2

Here you have some pics showing how the first replica looks like. The pieces have been joined just with a glue touch, so we can separate them after (we are painting it piece by piece). You may notice they’re gaps between junctions but, once builded, they match perfectly.

You may notice some of the pieces have been already painted. That’s just an example-advance of the technique we’re using for painting the model. Although it’s the first paint layer, the AT-AT looks much better.

Fully builded

This is why we choosed the 1/48 scale for our AT-AT. It’ll be pretty accurate for our diorama with Fine Molds Snowspeeders…

Here you have an advance of the first paint layers on the head (using the salt technique) and the work with the 7 led circuits covered with a see-through posterboard. More detailed info in our site :) moviekits.net/star-wars-at-at-148-scratchbuilt-2
