Star Trek GB?
Posted by mach71 on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 1:58 PM

We have a Hard SF GB and a Star Wars GB going on, Has anyone given any thought to starting a

Star Trek GB?

And maybe a Space 1999 GB?

I'm new to group builds, I'm not sure what the etiquette is on starting one.

Thanks

first is to pick the topic and get some basic rules and time frame. just steal rules from ongoing GBs, i do. next post a feeler in various forums that would fit. in this case scratchbuild and scifi might be it, maybe figures if doing crew members. if you get enough interest start it in GB forum and link that from the other significant forums. if you need a badge made ask. i have done a number for others and others folks do it too. you can have a specific pic or just tell the artist to go for it. that's it.

i would suggest allowing crossovers, most do but your GB your rules.

Have you thought of when you would start this GB?

IMHO, I think Star Trek GB would be a good bet, but, Space 1999 I'm not so sure. There are only a handful of kits out there for the subject.

I'm open to any start date. I've finished the 2 GB's that I was participating in so I have some time. I was going to ask about building a 2nd kit for the Hard SF GB, I just got a nice NOMAD resin kit, but then I thought a stand alone Star Trek build would be nice.

If there is any interest it would be nice to get one going.

While I love the TOS Enterprise, I think that Matt Jefferies design of the D-7 is near perfection.

I would love to see your build of it. Gamera's build in the hard SF GB was a pleasure to follow.

The PL kit is a nice kit.  Does anyone know if they fixed the neck issue on the later runs?

Thanks Mach71.

I have a Kirk figure I'd thought about trying to get built to match my Picard. Not sure if I can commit to anything soonish though.

Maybe after the 1st of the year then?

I'm thinking crossovers are good. and anything Trek. Figures, ships, props, sets, heck even the 1932 Cadillac from "A Piece of the Action".

Any other thoughts?

I want to do a 1/350 refit next year, so if this GB is a longer one allowing time for a large project, I can do it.

Mach71: I like that idea, I guess it would depend on the time scheme. I just got out of the hospital with a broken left collar bone and I'm not really able to do a lot of stuff now. Plus I've got a massive backlog of stuff from other GBs building up here that I can't get to.

I'd love to see you go ahead with this even if I can't join in right away though, some really cool models I'd love to see built up. I've got that same kit Ktkrow and would love to see what you do with her.

Gamera, sorry to hear that. How long will the collar bone take to heal? 6 weeks?

Maybe we should revisit this after the holidays.

What do you guys think for a duration, 6 months or 12? I would love to see Ktkrow

build the Refit. I've got one in my stash also.

6 - 12 sound good to me. I'm in 8 right now with 2 additional (mine) starting mid year that I know of. Mine will start Apr - June and I'm hopping things will have slowed down by then. Mid year may be great for a Sci fi build. I'd be in then, but right now I'm booked solid.

Mach71: Not sure but if you set the dates at 6 months a year I hope to God will be able to participate.

Steve's idea seems pretty good to me.

I would certainly like to take part in a Star Trek GB. But I am sure like many others, next year is already pretty full for me, its going to be a squeeze as it is. Given the large number of GB on going and about to start, and that 2 are already Sci Fi related, I might suggest starting this in the middle of next year, by which time many of the current GB's will have ended. And I would go for a length of between 8 and 12 months

Here is one idea you might want to consider. I try and fit GB's around related dates, hence the end date for the Star Wars GB. Sept 8th 2016 will be the 50th anniversary of the of the debut of Star Trek TOS on NBC. So how about a start date of 8th Sept 2015 and running for 12 months.

Just a thought.

That's sounds perfect. It sounds like a long way off but really not.

I have a TOS 1/350 Enterprise with all the blinky lights that I'm dying to do, but have one other project ahead of it. I think the "on-air" anniversary would be rather fitting.

Bish has a good idea here, it seems like a long time but it will be here before you know it.

Alright, It seems there are good reasons to wait abit.

Maybe we should re-visit this in the spring-summer time frame.

Great choice! I have a 1/350 Refit Enterprise, that I would like to light up. This would give me the time to get the lighting kit. Plus, I'm committed to 9 GB's right now. I'd like to have several of those finished by the time this starts!

I would like to join this GB.  I have only one build scheduled for next year and it is an office competition on building Revell's Mig-21.  That should be fun. :)

Current build: 1/48 Monogram A-1H & AMT Jedi Starfighter.

Completed:  1/48 Monogram/Revell P-61B, 1/32 Hasegawa F6F-5, 1/48 Hasegawa F-16C, 1/48 Revell Mig-21PFM, 1/48 Revell/Monogram AH-64A, Revell/Monogram 1/48 F-14D, AMT 1/420 USS Defiant, AMT 1/650(?) USS Enterprise, 1/72 Bandai VF-1J, AMT 1/537 USS Reliant, Academy 1/35 M1-A1 Abrams, Academy 1/48 F-86F30, Linbergh's USS Gato

I'd love an 'office build' competition, alas, I think I'm the only one I know in my world who builds Sad.

I like the idea of this as well. I have only participated in one other GB and failed to meet the deadline, though I did eventually finish it! Anyway, that time frame sounds like a winner as it will give me some time to find something I like and do some research and get things together.

I haven't done a group build on Finescale. I think this would be a good way for me to start.

I'm in.

Seems to take on an extra meaning now.

Round 2 has lots of great stuff out now.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

GMorrison,

I was just thinking about looking for the Mr. Spock model. I did it when I was a kid, I'd like another shot at it.

Gee, I"m in the mood to do a Trek model now too. Don't have the Spock figure, I have a feeling it might be hard to find one for awhile now though.
