More Robotech TV show questions
Posted by Rob Gronovius on Wednesday, April 14, 2004 6:14 PM
I found one of the DVD Robotech shows at my local K-Mart (wife wanted to hunt down some Martha Stewart collection towels before they were gone). I bought the only one they had, volume 4 (episodes 19-24) for a whopping $2.99. I used to catch the TV shows in the afternoons while working in college in the 80s (had a job at a Budget Rent-a-Car in Sears and it played in the waiting room).

Any way, finding this old TV show made me dig through some of my old sci-fi kits. One of the Robotech ones I found was something called the Valkyrie Super Fighter VF-1A by Bandai (1/72). The episodes I bought didn't have too much about this particular fighter/robot.

While I have an inkling regarding the entire series, what's the story behind these jet fighters/robots? Not much of the instruction sheet is in English, but I bet they have a pretty good storyline behind it.

There are a ton of websites out there about Valkyries, Macross and Macross model kits. Here's a few I frequent:

http://www.macrossworld.com/

http://www.starshipmodeler.com (look under Mecha and then click on Macross)

http://www.steelfalcon.com/macrossmecha.html

http://macross.anime.net/

http://nanashi.macrossmecha.info/

Robotech was the "americanized" version of Macross and was composed of 3 different Macross sagas, cut & pasted together, edited and somewhat censored for the U.S. TV viewers.

Regarding Macross-related model kits, Hasegawa has released quite a few of them the past couple of years. Revellogram (Revell at the time) repackaged some of the Bandai kits of the time and resold them in the U.S. as "Robotech Defenders", and you can still get the Bandai kits today (although retooled and a tad improved).
The Bandai Valkyrie kits are usually transformable between battroid, gerwalk and fighter plane. The Hasegawa kits are not transformable (you have to buy the fighter and the battroid separately) but they do have the Hasegawa quality and attention to detail. Excellent kits IMHO. Approve [^]

Best places to buy Macross model kits:

http://www.hlj.com

http://www.gundamstoreandmore.com

http://www.rainbowten.co.jp/english/

http://www.valkyrie-exchange.com/

http://www.ebay.com

http://www.hobbyfan.com/

Hope this helps. Enjoy! Cool [8D]

Also there is sort of a 'Macross Genisis' going on now in the form of a DVD series called 'Macross Zero'. It's involves the development of the VF fighter with it's prototype called the VF-0. Hasegawa produces model kits of this and a sort of anti-Valkyrie, the SV-51. I would recommend the Macross Compendium site http://www.anime.net/macross/ as the most comprehensive site that describes the Macross Universe.

Actually, MZ was on TV first, not straight to DVD... Just in case anyone got a bit confused there...

Macross Zero was on TV?!

Are you sure about this? I could have sworn it was like Macross Plus in being an OAV.

Also, Akuma,
Do you live close to the Milford area in CT? There's an annual Model Show there in October. I trying to get some Sci-Fi stuff of mine ready for it. I saw your web site and it would be great if you brought your Mecha that you have posted there to the show.

On the Sunday of Columbus Day weekend, there is the Annual Model Show sponsored ny the Igor Sikorsky IPMS. It's held at the Knight of Columbus hall on the Post Road (Route 1) in Milford. This year I think it'll be on October 10th.

Here's a link to an image gallery I have from last year's show:

Not a heck of a lot of Sci Fi. Last year was better. I'm definitely bringing a couple of things this year just for the sake of volume for the Sci Fi display.

Hm, dunno if I'll still be in CT by then...

But I'll see...

Most people really don't seem to like mecha though, or atleast that's how I see it from how people describe some shows and all...

Judges may not be crazy about mecha subjects but many younger attendees of these shows do. I see it as showing something different rather than participating in a competition.

In June of this year in Tennesse is an annual show called Wonderfest, dedicated to Sci-Fi/Fantasy modeling. Here's a link with photos of last year's show:

I think I've heard of it before...

And if I were to enter, I'd enter something non-Gundam or anything too simple looking... Maybe would enter something like this: http://www.blue-devil.net/chaosgear/WryResin.html (this page is one I still need to add a link to on my site.... )
