Ah, the wonders of time compression...

I enjoyed the film immensely! And I don't think "inaccuracy" even applies since the Alien life cycle has never been scientifically explored on film. As I mentioned in a previous post (page 3, I think), the writers for the Dark Horse Aliens comic series theorize that the aliens develop at a variable rate based on whatever is the appropriate speed for the survival of the species. They grow as fast as they need to in order to propagate and to make a good scary movie! Works for me!

IMO, the only thing to dislike about the film is its length. I was ready for another 30 minutes of action.

Hated the film. But...

Ripley said that the Alien wiped out her crew in less than 24 hours. So it's not as slow of a growing process as some may be thinking. But 10 minutes per stage is a stretch.

Guys, please watch the spoilers. A big part of the fun of a movie is ... seeing what happens.

Just a little trivia, but the original Predator was a 'crab-like' creature which John McTiernan filmed two scenes with before sending it back to the studio. The actor originally cast in this role was 5'10" (1.78m) tall Jean Claude Van-Damme. Stan Winston came up with the final creature design on a flight to Japan, and cast 7'2" (2.18m) tall Kevin Peter Hall to play the Predator. It was felt that Hall was more of a threat to the bodybuilding actors in the film. Since Hall was always cast as monstors or sub-humans (he was bigfoot in Harry and the Hendersons, for example) McTiernan also cast him as the black helicopter pilot in the end of the film so that Kevin would finally show his face on-screen.
A lot of this is on the new DVD set that came out in the past few weeks.

I went and saw this movie sunday and all I can say about it is,"that I should have wait untill it came out on video."What took 2-3 days for the alien to grown from the hand and bust out of the chest has now been done in an hour. What a waist of money and most defently a waist of some good film.Digger

Then you can watch them LIVE as they come get me and boot me out of the theater!

I had a change of heart because the New York Times review was not totally negative. What the hell, I have a friend who likes movies like this too.

I admit the movie could have been better {I would have liked to see it based on the Dark Horse series} but I still enjoyed it.

And the fans! Don't forget the fans!
The fans of both fanchises have been begging for this for years.

True, the fans will be winners too - as long as the movie doesn't suck (crossing my fingers)

Inconsistent with the first encounter with face hugger when he dripped acid from a cut on the knuckle.

That's also inconsistent with an early Dark Horse story when the Predators (and one Asian female human) used an amputated bloody Alien finger to mark themselves on the forehead as badges of victory. THAT had to hurt!

I'm not sure, but that may be from the very first Predator vs Aliens series Dark Horse did.

I picked up one of the Dark Horse comics for Aliens. I don't remember all of it, but basically some group sent human Ninjas into this area protected by aliens. After trying to kill a guard and getting that wonderful acid squirted on them, one lopped off a leg at a joint and ....no acid. So from there on, the remaining ninjas lopped off arms and legs of any Aliens that got in there way. I'm sure it's not canon, but it was neat none the less.

I guess it wouldn't happen in a movie because Humans like machineguns and walking forklifts too much. :D

LOL, maybe a queen takes longer to develop than a drone/warrior alien. My 2 cents [2c]

The writers of the first Dark Horse Aliens series offer a very believable explanation for the differing gestation periods:

"Perhaps our worst mistake was underestimating the sheer instinctual cunning of the creatures. We didn't see the underlying pattern behind their evolutionary process -- the way every facet of their existance was geared toward 'propagation'. The queens matured at whatever speed their *survival* dictated."

"We had assumed the gestation period was time for the alien embryo to feed and grow, but it was more than that. It was an opportunity for the unknowing host to spread it's spore to other sites." (Aliens, Book One - Dark Horse graphic novel, page 143)

In other words, the alien embryos can choose, in a limited way, the best time to be "born". It has been suggested that the aliens communicate on a basic telepathic level and can use this skill 'in utero' to read information from their human host, thereby determining the most opportune time to emerge.

A die-hard Aliens and Predator fan,

Mark

I don't know Brian, from what I've seen on the previews I don't think your missing much. Looks kind of formatic to me. I'll just wait till the DVD comes out.

Ifthe movie does get a PG 13 rating; when the DVD gets released I'm sure they'll release an "uncut" R version for the older folks.........man, I just hope the movie is good (a sleeper like Independence Day, I remember a movie "critic" saying : "according to the trailer it's going to look like all the action will be at the end, dumb plot, cheesy lines, and not much else"....boy was this idiot wrong.

Reminds me of the Dark Horse comic coverage a few years back (I think)...
Maybe bringing Ripley in with Arnold for a "Tag Team" 3-way would make it interesting!

Exactly. Violence is a staple of both franchises. I just don't think you can do to many chestbursters or gruesome predator attacks in a PG-13 movie.

I also think a less violent and gory movie will take away from the story. The realism just won't be there.
