Baton Rouge class update.
Posted by Woody on Thursday, November 11, 2004 6:56 PM
I finally finished the saucer section! I'm busy gluing a bunch of cooling fins onto my warp nacelle master. I thought I'd take a sec to show you a couple pics of the finished saucer section master less it's sealer coat.

Well back to those pesky fins. This is going to make me cross eyed!Tongue [:P]

Hee Hee, Thanks Matt! I just sprayed the sealer coat on my warp nacelle master and it looks like I can call that little hurdle done too. Let's see, just warp nacelle pylons and bussard collectors to go. Approve [^]Big Smile [:D]

I'm glad I have all those fins glued on.

Here is a comparison of the raw part fresh off the lathe and the primer sealed piece.

Please do! Not sure what the problem is, but I'm sure it's a conspiracy perpetuated by those COMM Nazi's so that I can't view really kewel pics! Big Smile [:D]

A brief update. I just finished the bussard collector so the only structure left to fabricate are the pylons. Wink [;)]

I'm starting on the four warp nacelle pylons and I would like to ask a question.
As a potential builder would you like the pylons as four seperate pieces, attached to the engneering hull, or attached to the nacelles. I'm leaning toward four seperate pieces with locating holes in the engineering hull and pins on the end of the pylons. Because they are so thin, I was also thinking of casting those parts with a section of brass tube placed in the mold before adding the resin. What do you think?

I'm wondering if some sort of stock rectangular metal tube could be used for the pylons.

Funny you should say that. The master is made from K&B 3/32 X 3/16 rectangle brass tubing.

So I'm thinking that rather than casting weaker resin pylons, why not just include lengths of brass stock that the builder can cut to length? If there's any little doodads, those can be separate resin pieces or scratchbuilt by the builder.

At the very least I could include a template so the builder could shape their own supplied tubing. K&B tubing can be found at most hobby shops.

Woody have you ever thought to cast the thinner pieces in white metal since white metal is structurally more stable than Resin and it uses the same type of molding material that resin does.

That's not a bad idea. I've thought about buying the equipment to melt and pour white metal. I'll more than likely be trying that out somewhere down the road.

The only hobby store in my town has the brass of which you speak - but does not keep it stocked! Sad [:(]

I am continually shopping for brass there but I am continually disappointed...

I am anxious to buy one of these from you too. But I will probably also have to buy some brass from you as well.

OH. Almost forgot!

LOOKS BEAUTIFUL!!! Tongue [:P]

Time to break out a new toy.Tongue [:P]

Locating holes in short order!

The pylon master less the pin.

Locating pin for the pylon master.

The master for the bussard collector domes. It was turned from a chunk of plexiglass and polished while still on the lathe using "0000" synthetic steelwool.

Bussard collector posed ontop of the warp nacelle master.

Yippy Yahoo! After a false start on my warp nacelle mold, I have produced a bubblefree hollow cast nacelle. I'm very incouraged by this clean near perfect casting. I'll be tackling the secondary hull mold next. Wish me luck. Wink [;)]Big Smile [:D]

I just primed and set aside the first two nacelles I pulled from the mold. The second wasn't as perfect as the first but it was still nice. These will be going into my ST group build which I'm leaning toward marking as the USS Republic. I looked over my secondary hull master a bit ago and I believe I'll be tackling the mold for it tomorrow.

Just a quick note to say I haven't abandoned this project. Too much going on right now but I hope to be back at it in a week or so. Wink [;)]

I'm still stalled on the kit but I've made a little progress with the castings for my build. As soon as time and funds allow I'll be ordering more RTV to finish this kit. Please feel free to tell me what you think of this project so far.Wink [;)]

This first image is of the completed master parts. The secondary hull and warp nacelles have already yeilded RTV molds and the castings seem ok to me.

This is a shot of the master saucer section posed with the cast and primed secondary hull and warp nacelles. I'm happy with the effect.

Here is a pic of the master saucer section, neck pylon, and deflector dish assembled to check fit of the secondary hull casting.

Another angle of the same. I'm very relieved and pleased with the look. The original painting doesn't show the underside so I was left with fan versions and my own imagination. Not being happy with the fan interpretation of this vessels underside, I took a leap and designed it from scratch. To my eye it looks right.

Here is a closer look at the same.

The kit master parts are on the left and the castings are on the right.

I hope to resume casting in the next couple week. This is my first full resin kit and it has and still is a learning experience.
