Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, February 8, 2005 3:58 AM
I just got fine molds x-wing, and before i get too far into it I was wondering what the correct color grey was for the fuselage. I downloaded the english instructions but all it said was grey and not what type of grey.

Are you doing an X-wing as seen in the movie, a copy of the studio model, etc.

The colour will depend on those and many other factiors, since it is an imaginary craft there is NO correct colour. Wink [;)]

Well I followed my own color thoughts.. I always took the color from what I saw when Luke hopped in the 1:1 prop.. It always looked white to me.. And so I have always thought that the X-Wing was white.. Alot of people in Sci Fi modelling seem to think that they have to copy the studio models, regardless of what you see on screen.. I like to go with what I see on screen, and that is a white, if not very light grey X-Wing fighter... What I did, I base coated mine in a light grey, and then I lightly put a spray of white over the top. I did it evenly, and was happy with the result.. It really doesnt matter what color you paint it, as long as it gains the look that you yourself are happy with? Good luck!

I always saw it as white that's been abused to an *almost * grey color.
I think thats why so many go with MM camo grey. It's not a bad color, but
I kinda feel its got a little too much brown tint to it sometimes.
This is my fav. he made it look like it WAS white once upon a time

Heres an original red 3. In some of them it looks dirty white and others more grey

So its really up to you to decide

IMO, white is the wrong colour as it is a high-maintenance colour to preserve it looks.
I would go with something like Gundam White or even a more slightly greyish colour.

Pure colours, IMHO, are only used for commercial vehicles and hardly ever for any vehice that needs to work hard(Military, etc)

Here in Denver at the Wings Over the Rockies Museum we have one of the full scale X-wings used in the movie. The color is definitely grayish although I don't recall the exact shade (light to medium, I think). If you can wait a couple days, I'll try to get over there and get you some pics.

Hmmm...OK MM, which way are you going to go on this one? Wink [;)]
(OK, OK, you did say IMO...)

I always thought X-Wings LOOKED to be a dirty, weathered white.

When building SF stuff from films, TV, or other visual media, I consider what is shown on screen to be the "references," absolutely no different than footage or photos of any aircraft, ship, tank, or automobile. As has been mentioned elsewhere, studio models often look very different "live" than they do on screen, due to the necessities of filming.
Having said that, real vehicles often look very different on film, too.

And as MM said in his FIRST comment, it's an imaginary craft, so there really is no correct color (or wrong color either, eh?Wink [;)]).

Trust your eyes, Luke...

I found model masters camoflauge grey to look perfect, a little too light at first but after weathering it looks exactly like the ones you see on screen.
