'Nother set of engines, and, as somebody mentioned, maybe another set of cannon (for a total of 8, 4 on the wings and 4 in the middle).

Or, alternately, totaly remove the outboard engines and replace them with a set of high output engines mounted in the center section.

Then there's the concept of making the second hull some massive HWOD.

yeah there's gotta be something on that 2nd fuselage or that whole half of the ship will seem pointless... a cockpit or major weapon or something has to be over there.

Definately put some space between the fuselages.Maybe you could make this bird into a counterpart to the TIE bomber. Some type of turret in place of a second cockpit would be extremely cool.

For the wings to open/close, you could do away with moving hinges and go for a more simple (and reliable) slot and post system instead. One set of straight-out slots for closed and one set of fixed-angle slots for open with posts on the wings. There would be no range of motion to consider. This would mean you have to slide the wings out of the plane to change their position, but if you build it right, this is very sturdy and your X will always be perfect instead of rickety, floppy wings that flap all around. This is what I have done to car doors rather than struggle with pin hinge stuff. I'm really happy with the way everything is perfectly straight and sturdy. I used rectangle tube (common styrene stock) for the slots and the correct size rectangle rod to telescope inside the tubes. I've been making a lot of use of the miter box & saw, miter sander, L-square and protractor for this sort of scratchbuilding job.

Great idea! Just to keep everbody thinking, how about making it a heavy/assault fighter. Do away with the second cockpit on the other hull and make the remaining cockpit a two seater arranged like the snow speeder. In the place of the removed cockpit place an ION canon. As stated above just have one astro-mech. Make the back fuselage of the cannon side completely different with maybe a sheild generator toward the back and cooling equipment for the ION canon between that and the canon. You might think about an antenna like the dish on then Falcon mounted on a structure that ties the two back fuselages together. Very, very cool concept you've come up with! I hope you run with it.

Replace one of the R2's with a small laser turret, sort of like on the Y-wing. Interesting idea, haven't seen that before.

I'd space the fuselages apart a wee bit, maybe add two more engines.

You only need one R2 unit for the ship. I'd turn the non-R2 side's top kibble strips around backwards or slice it up & rearrange it to make it different from the other side. The rear kibble is hyperthrust equipment, so it should be the same on both halves. If you're planning on making linkage to operate the x-foils together, that's gonna be complicated with rails & gears inside and a bunch of work that no one will ever even see, so I'd work on making stiff joints for opening and closing both sides independently. I wouldn't do red marks on a non-fighting ship. Maybe brown, gray or black.
