Okley dokley...
I bought the two-piece kit from Jim Key at Custom Replicas because I thought I would be converting it into a radio controlled sub. But after I got it in about two weeks - they don't cast the model until it is ordered and/or paid for - from FedEx, I found the model too beautiful to risk the resin rakers and keel to the abuse it would take as an R/C sub.
And it is indeed a
gorgeous kit!
Most of the detail is crisp and clean. There are a few places where I might lose a few rivets while I am cleaning up a bit of flash. Mostly around the port and starboard "keels" where the mold line are obvious.
Replacing the teeny-tiny rivets will be a pain!
But the rest of the kit makes it worthwhile.
Found one small void this morning. Right where the rudder will attach to the lower fin. Should not be too hard to fix.
Almost forgot to mention! You can get the
NAUTILUS as a one-piece kit! That will save quite a bit of work because you won't be tempted to scratchbuild the Salon as I am planning to do. But it is your choice and I think the price is about the same - but I don't know that for sure.
There is a tiny bit of warpage that I found when fitting the upper and lower hulls together. When I press the aft portion tight together the bow doesn't want to sit right. But the gap is very small and I am confident that I can overcome it.
BTW I am a virgin when it comes to a model this big!
There are probably problems coming soon that I am just too dumb to see.
I will have to use the bathtub to wash this puppy in! It is too big for the kitchen sink.
But the mold release must go!
Here is a Gallery of photos from the best painted
NAUTILUS that I have ever seen. This is the look I am aiming for!

It will be a long while before I have any pictures to share. I am just now getting the blueprints together to plan the build of the interior. Then I must get in the supplies. Find some appropriate 72nd scale seamen...
Yadda yadda yadda...
Let me know if you have more questions. But I give this kit :
