Finished FineMolds Jedi Starfighter
Posted by gwaihir on Wednesday, May 18, 2005 8:33 PM
Well I made a hard push to finish this to honor the kick-off of SW III. It was for a build-along over on scalehobby.com. This was a really nice kit, and I really enjoyed doing it. During the build when I went to put on one of the major red decals, my clumbsy hands destroyed it, so I masked and painted the major red and green areas which actually made it easier to weather those parts. Otherwise, it went fairly trouble free. Personally, I really like the look of the starfighter, but don't really care for the hyperdrive ring, so after some internal fighting with myself, I decided to pass on that part (I'll save it and may do it someday, but as for right now, I like the starfighter alone on its stand.)

Let me know what you think - both good and bad. I am still learning and love constructive criticism as well as praise.

Leon

Very nice work Leon. I think the painted areas rather than decals look great! Makes me want to build one Cool [8D].

Looks great too me. I can see no fault. I was following over at Scalehobby when you posted your decal dilemma, nice recovery.Approve [^]

That's a sharp looking starfighter you've got there. I like the idea of the hyperdrive ring, but I'd probably go with your method of displaying this kit. Maybe put the ring together and display it off to the side of the ship? I like the subtle weathering on yours as well.

Nice one. I think you did a good job. Specially masking and painting as there seems to be no bleeding.
I share your point of view about the ring.
The only thing I didn't like is the color you chose for the droid. There isn`t much contrast with the ship.

Looks great, and the paint worked out probably a lot better than the decals would have!

Looks great! Great save with the painted markings, which, as others have mentioned, actually look better than the decals!
Nice job on that little kit!

Really impressive, the paint job looks great - very subtle + effective weathering and highlighting!
You certainly wouldn't know it was 1/72 from the pictures! I've seen some other pics of the FineMolds Jedi Starfighter which didn't look too good, but your example is a lot better.

I'm currently working on rebuilding the toy Jedi Starfighter, in the same way as the X-Wing I recently finished (It's much more accurate, dimension-wise, than the X-Wing; the newer toy ships/vehicles generally seem to be better in terms of accuracy) and am probably going to paint it in a similar colour scheme.
What are the dimensions of the FineMolds model? The "JSF" isn't that big even in 1/24, so I'm guessing it must be tiny in 1/72.

Referring to the droid colour that others have mentioned, it is actually red in the film AFAIK, but maybe a slightly lighter shade would have made it stand out more. The toy has it moulded in a distinct red colour, contrasting with the purplish crimson of the ship; not sure if these are the exact colours of the ship in the film though.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate your comments. I admitedly wasn't sure what to do with the droid color. For the major red of the starfighter I used Testors British Crimson and then Tamiya Red for the droid. It probably would have been better a little more different - live and learn.

As for what the droid is...I think obie-wan had an r4 unit, whether that is different than an r2 unit, I don't know.

Obi Wan's Jedi Starfighter had a R4 unit droïd (named R4-D17)... R2 and R4 units are externally the same, but they have a different software. I dono the differents...

The Delta Seven looks great!! Does anyone know if there is a model of the new Jedi Interceptor (in Episode III), the Eta Two?? I love this new Starfighter, a mix between the Delta-7 and a Tie Fighter Blush [:I]

Revell have just released two new kits of the Eta-2 JSF, one as Anakin's and one as Obi's ship. No difference between the two other than the pilot figure and the colour scheme.

Both are 1/27 scale and quite detailed, they're pre-painted and snap-together but could definitely be improved by some glue + paint.
They're available very widely here in the UK - not just model shops, but high street toy shops + department stores have them. Not sure about France though/

Great work, Leon. I can't wait until the RoG models show up in my LHS.
