I build allot of armor so I use some of the same techniques that i use for that. The paints are all flat. Floquil has their Rail Road colors. Most are flat and come in interesting colors. I happen to use enamels mostly. I also use Model Master flat enamels that I also use for armor. The only trick is to use a flat clear like Dullcoat etc. That on top of the wild colors gives it that effect.

Here is my 2nd Gundam subject. I don"t know allot about Gundam, I just thought it looked cool. It's box stock, painted with Floquil RR colours, MM enamels and craft paints. It's from Seed Destiny.
