WWII Cruisers & BB's rigging question
Posted by Guchi on Monday, August 11, 2008 9:17 AM
I have a question that may seem silly (but I just have to know the answer).

Was the line, that went from the foremast to the Jackstaff at the fore peak (& Mainmast to the ensign staff at the stern), always rigged, or was it only a "dressing" line used to decorate the ship during special occasions/visits?

I mean was that line also rigged when these ships went into action? Again nationality and navies aside, what was the 'norm'?

Thanks

I spent some time in the Viet Nam era navy and saw the New Jersey more than once. The line you are asking about is not rigged underway and as far as I know is only rigged for special occasions. All unnessary rigging is taken down before battle to avoid fouling or the possibllity of shooting into the lines. Ship guns firing systems have cut out cams designed so you can't shoot into your own ship's superstructure but lines are not accounted for. Nothing can be affixed to or taken away from a USN ship without having authorization or having the cut out cam redone.
