Were I doing it I'd pre-stain all parts before assembly as any glue left on the surface will reject any stain you use. An alternative would be to build the thing and just paint it as you would a plastic model. In which case a sealer before painting will give you consistent and controllable results. It also depends on wether you want a natural wood finish to the model and be more decorative , or for authentic colors you would use paint.

Using a sealer will give you smoother wood and use less paint or stain.

Noob wood ship kit question
Posted by pmm736 on Saturday, October 11, 2008 5:46 PM

I volunteered to build a kit for a friend and although I just got it and see that I may have bitten off a bit more than I can chew (being a plastic builder until now) I'm going to move forward.  The kit is the Panart 1/78 scale HMS Victory Bow Section.

My first question - of which there may be many - is regarding the finishing of the wood.  I need to finish the interior decks and bulkheads, which will be visible after assembly, before I close it up.  Right out of the box, does the wood in these kits need to be prepped before painting or varnishing?  Should I be hitting it with a sanding sealer to avoid raising the grain of the wood or  does the kind of wood they use make this step uneccessary?

Thanks in advance for any assistance
